E. V. Haughtwout Building
This building here is a pretty important one and its not just because its entire facade is made of prefabricated cast iron but because it is the first building with the first successful passenger elevator which was powered by a team engine in the basement. Back in the late 18th to late 19th century there were some building and bridges which were built or partially built out of cast iron which was replaced with steel in the late 19th century due to cast iron easily melting in fires and cracking under tension. Built in 1857 by E. V. Haughtout and housed Eder V. Haughtwout fashionable emporium which sold cut glass, silverware and it own handcrafted fine china. It had such historic shoppers as Mary Todd Lincoln. The building was designated as a New York city landmark in 1965 and added to the National register of Historic Places in 1973 and its facade was restored in 1995 back to its off white color.
