An der Ecke wo sich die fifth Avenue mit dem Broadway und der 23. Straße
kreuzt, ließ sich die Fuller Company, welche eine der ersten Baufirmen
war die sich auf Hochhäuser spezialisiert hat, im Jahre 1902, durch den
Architekten Daniel Hudson Burnham, einen neuen Firmensitz errichten.
Da das Grundstück an der Straßenecke eine keilförmige Grundform hatte,
entschied sich der Architekt diese für seinen Entwurf zu übernehmen, um
die Fläche optimal auszunutzen. So entstanden die charakteristische
Form und der Name des Hochhauses; seine Form erinnert an ein Bügeleisen.
Das Gebäude wurde, wie zur damaligen Zeit typisch, im Rohbau als
Stahlskelett gebaut; Danach wurde es mit Kalkstein verkleidet.
Aufgrund der schmalen Front von gerade einmal zwei Metern Breite
fürchteten viele Bürger nach der Fertigstellung des Hochhauses, dass es
bei einem Sturm einstürzen könnte.
Die anfängliche Skepsis gegenüber der Formneuheit des 22-stöckigen
Gebäudes sorgte wohl für die schnelle Bekanntheit des Hauses. Schon bald
war es das Postkartenmotiv schlechthin und ist seither auch sonst in
zahlreichen Formen in den Souvenirshops Manhattans zu finden.
Bis heute wechselte das Gebäude zahlreiche Male seine Besitzer. Zurze
it gehört es der Sorgente Group, welche weltweit zahlreiche Immobilien
besitzt und diese verwaltet.
Doch eines hat sich über all die Jahre nicht geändert. Das Flatiron
Building ist immer ein Bürogebäude geblieben. Und auch die Faszination
ist nicht verloren gegangen. So kommt kaum ein New York Besucher drum
rum ein Foto vor dem einzigartigen Gebäude zu schießen.

On the crossing of the fifth Avenue, the Broadway and the 23rd street, the
Fuller Company, which was one of the first companies to specialise on
skyscrapers, ordered architect Daniel Hudson Burnham in 1902 to construct
them a new Headquarter building.
Because of the oddly shaped foundation, the architect decided to use it
directly in his construction plans, to use every inch of space he was given.
So much about the origin of the buildings unique shape; That shape directly
influenced its name, because it looks like... well, a flat iron...
The building was constructed with steel beams first to which a layer of
limestone was added. Because of its slim shape of only 2 meters in width,
many citizens of New York feared that it would fall over during a storm some
time after the construction was finished.
Despite of the fact that the 22-floored building had somewhat of an irregular
shape, it quickly gained attention because of that.
It was THE building to print on post-cards and even to this day replicas are
widely found in souvenir shops in Manhattan.
To this day, the building changed its owners from time to time. Currently, it
is owned by the Sorgente Group, which globally owns and govern many real
estates.
But however, one thing hasn't changed in all the years since it was built.
The Flatiron Building has always remained an office building. And the
fascination for it was never lost either. Thats why no New York citizen
could ever NOT take a photgraph of this amazing and unique building.
