After looking through some Planet Minecraft Geobukseon posts, I realized there are not many Korean style ships built on here. The Geobukseon (거북선), literally translated to “Turtle Ship,” is a Joseon Dynasty era ship that dominated Korean naval battlefields from as early as 1415 to about 1600 AD. To defend against Japanese invasions, one of the most famous Korean historical figures, Admiral Yi Sun Shin commanded a fleet of ships (including Geobukseons), and proceeded to win 16/16 battles until the Japanese Navy was wiped out.

The Geobukseon is a post medieval ship fit with cannons of various calibers and a large iron shell fit with spikes to deter boarding. It does not seem like the most aqua dynamic ship, given its bulky, square shape, but the inclusion of 10-12 oars with its massive sails proved otherwise, making the ship agile and fast in order for efficient ramming tactics. The dragon head in the front of the ship often shot cannonballs or flames.

The ship was designed for close quarters combat and ramming. Upon ramming a ship, the Geobukseon would release a volley of cannon fire, severely damaging capital ships. The iron plating prevented efficient grappling and the spikes prevented boarding as it typically meant impalement. The heavy armoring of the ship also deflected arrow and light cannon fire.

If anyone is interested in seeing a replica of this ship, there is a war memorial in Seoul (War Memorial of Korea) that I have visited in the past that has a model Geobukseon on display. I remember the model being quite smaller than expected, but still was an impressive feat of design and definitely was one of the unique ironclads out there.
