History up to November 1908:

Originally the Ironclad Battleship Zhenyuan (or Chen Yuen) of the Imperial Chinese Navy's Beiyang Fleet. She was built at A.G. Vulcan Shipyards in Stettin, Germany and completed on April 1884 but the ongoing Sino-French War prevented her from being delivered to China.

After the war, the Zhenyuan along with her sistership Dingyuan and the cruiser Jiyuan were delivered to China and commissioned on November 1885. The ship was present during the Nagasaki Incident on August 1886 where an altercation between Chinese crewmen and Japanese locals resulted into the deaths of eight Chinese and two Japanese. The ship spent the next seven years on training cruises and visiting foreign ports.

During the First Sino-Japanese War, she was present at the Battle of Yalu River (17th September 1894) and the Battle of Weihaiwei (20th January to 12th February 1895). After the Chinese surrender, the ship was taken into Japanese service and renamed Chinyen on 16th March 1895. She is the only capital ship of the Imperial Japanese Navy at that time until the Fuji-class battleships entered service in 1897. The ship was present during the Boxer Rebellion as part of the naval forces of the eight-nation alliance.

During the Russo-Japanese War, she served as flagship of the 3rd Fleet under Vice Admiral Shichiro Kataoka. She saw action at the Battle of the Yellow Sea (10th August 1904) where she scored several hits on Russian ships while receiving only two hits. She was part of the blockade of Port Arthur until its surrender on January 1905. She was then part of the force that bombarded Vladivostok on 6th March 1905 but failed to inflict any serious damage. Her next action was on the Battle of Tsushima (27th to 28th May 1905) where she helped sink the supply ship Kamchatka and later escorted the seven captured Russian ships back to Japan. Her last participation of the war was on the Invasion of Sakhalin (July 1905) where she helped in covering the amphibious landings. After the war she was present at the Fleet Review on 23rd October 1905 to celebrate Japan's victory over the Russians.

On 11th December 1905, she was re-designated as a Coastal Defense Ship for wartime use and as a Training Ship in peacetime. She participated in both the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers and the Imperial Naval Review held at Kobe, Japan on 17th November 1908. She was assigned to the temporary 3rd Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Sadayasu Tomioka who is also the commander of Ryojun Naval District. The Commanding officer of the ship is Captain Katsuya Kitano from the College of Mercantile Marine who commanded the ship since 28th August 1908.
