Introduction

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole fighters undergoing final development and testing by the United States. The F-35 has three models. The F-35A, (CTOL) [Conventional Takeoff & Landing] variant ; The F-35B, (STOVL) [Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing] variant, and F-35C carrier variant.


The aircraft, which had its first flight on December 15, 2006, was developed from the Joint-Strike Fighter program's winning design, the X-35. NATO Members, and close U.S. Allies are partnered in the program; other countries are ordering or considerng orderng the aircraft. The Stealth, multirole fighter is, in the United States, replacing the U.S. Air Force's A-10 & F-16, U.S. Navy F/A-18s, and U.S. Marine Corps' AV-8B's and F/A-18s.
