Lost Island in a Dish is my first vanilla based published project.
I had set myself some challenges by deciding to use not only Minecraft default blocks & textures (as per the regulations), but also transform only vanilla Minecraft generated islands. What the...??
I have had a lot of happy experiences in creating Worldpainter islands and have enjoyed the absolute freedom of creating land masses (almost) exactly as I wish.
However, I still very much remember the days when Minecraft randomly generated the weird and wonderful worlds we happily inhabited. Thrilled and surprise by the wacky shapes of the terrain we would find.
So...the challenge I set myself here was to landscape and beautify an island that was generated as much as possible within the game. An Island that I had no real control over creating.
Well....I could carve it up a little and tweak it a little here and there.
I guess I wanted to feature the "default" functionality of the game Minecraft.
The only real liberties to my stipulation was of course the creation of the bonsai dish and sand platform. Both of which were generated with the very simplest of commands in Worldpainter. And the cut and paste functionality of Forge and World Edit. The legs on the Bonsai dishes were built by me; turning a simple disc into a recognisable form. A Bonsai dish.
The construction of the trees, focus' on the classical exposed branch structure of an aged Tree.
The Four Accompanying and surrounding Islands are for display purposes only.

THE WORLD
Lost Island in a Dish (Central Island) is a direct result of my love of Bonsai.
The visual concept of a fully developed tree in miniature, is endlessly pleasurable. I've wanted to do a Bonsai in minecraft for so long, and I chose this contest to have a go :P

The Central Island is the Island that will be judged.
The surrounding Four Islands are a Display setting that would be constructed in a real Bonsai design.
Their purpose is to balance the symmetry of the subject in focus.
Nonetheless, the surrounding islands are as per my specifications; Minecraft generated islands, with custom landscaping by me.
...just a little aside about the display dishes
As a bonsai artist harvests rocks from the wild; I see myself having done the very same.
The display dishes are a collection of rocks from the amazing Minecraft Wilderness.
The trees covering the display islands are also minecraft trees (Acacias).
They are simply planted on top of each other to give a new experience.
They now resemble Japanese Mountain Pines.

CREATING THE CENTRAL SUBJECT
The challenge of creating a successful bonsai display is most certainly the Tree you choose.
As a subject for Bonsai, I have always preferred Conifers. I love their branch structure and majestic shape.
The Tree I chose to recreate is a giant mountain spruce. It is also part of the Minecraft item repertoire.
Delicate foliage sparsely cover the elegant trunks and outstretched branches.
Long and slender trees in their old age; they swoop and weep in classical poses.
Shaped by the weight of eons of snowfall.
However, they take 100 years to achieve this effect.
So, to achieve this "Aged" effect in Bonsai, you would use a similar, finer leafed tree with a gnarly bark.
A tree like a Cedar or Cypress; to replicate the branch structure and weathered bark of a giant spruce.
I've used the same principles as I would in Bonsai; when creating Lost Island in a Dish.

To display the Giant Spruce, I took inspiration from a bonsai image I found on Pinterest.
Here (pic above) the artist has used a type of Cedar tree, pruned into the shape of a giant Mountain Spruce.
This is often the magic of Bonsai ~ Looks like a Spruce, but is not actually a Spruce.
The Minecraft generated island stack is a mixture of sandstone, diorite, sand, gravel and dirt.
The precarious leaning and balancing stack rises up to the sky; clad in Giant Spruce clinging to every crack and crevice.

IDEAS.....
The stack would make an excellent building platform for an adventurous architect. A maze of tunnels and scaffolds making an eventual path to the summit and a lighthouse.

To present Island in a Dish, I chose a plain but handsome bonsai dish with stand legs.
The juxtaposition of the desert sands against the emerald blue water gives a simple setting to the intricacy
of the Island's Giant Spruces.

Update #3 : by billoxiiboy 04/20/2018 7:14:33 amApr 20th, 2018
A small temple now resides on top of the Lost Island. The challenge is now yours; to forge a path to the top of the island. See what treasures await you at the top.
I couldn't help myself and planted some white tulips to help lighten the darker, shadowed areas under the bows of the trees.
The contest entry download has been updated to include the temple and flowers.
The Multiple dish display download does not yet include the modifications.
