Hello there,
This is my first real attempt at a modern style house. I decided to use the Urban Sprawl texture pack by Katalyka - http://www.planetminecraft.com/texture_pack/urban-sprawl-64x-1421118/ -
I started by making a basic doorway as the entrance to the house. After that i began work on the front garden and driveway, I chose the chiseled sandstone as it gave a brick effect, but without looking nasty. When the front garden was done, I decided not to finish the structure/walls but to begin work on the living room (sofas and table area near door) I lowered the ground for a styling effect. For the actual sofas, I used beds! because on this texturepack beds are a mattress so they look suited them. after the living room I made a small indoor pond sort of thing with lilly pads and vines. The bottom of the pond is clay (brick like) then Glowstone and the weird glowing red bits are netherrack, I chose the netherrack because of the animations it has made a cool look underwater.
All throughout the house, I've made it look new, like you've just moved in. I did this using melons :D they have a parcel/box texture allowing me to create this effect. If you look right by the main door you'll see the first example of this.
After doing the pond, I made a small room and decided to make it a bathroom. I used an ender portal frame to create the toilet, with a trapdoor above. outside the bathroom are a few bookcases just for look and aesthetics.
Moving upstairs I created a spiral staircase. when you reach the top you see a room ahead that if you enter is the bedroom, with a double bed more boxes and a door onto the balcony. further along the corridor is an office with a very nice computer (jack-o-lantern i believe so useful :DD )
Outside these 2 rooms using the majority of this floor is an open plan, kitchen and dining room, with a hole sort of thing overlooking the indoor pond. The textures of crafting tables, dispensers and furnaces (also cauldrons and brewing stands) helped create a modern looking kitchen, the dining room is your usual design of pressure plates on fences and stairs with signs.
Back at the other end of the corridor are a set of double doors leading onto a balcony. The balcony connects with the bedroom and also has a set of stairs leading down to the back garden.
This garden features 2 deck chairs and an umbrella for shade, 2 nice flower beds and trees. taking up most of the garden is a swimming pool with lapis lazuli ore I think, as its a nice blue shaded brick texture. the pool isnt too deep due to the flat map, but it has a low diving board anyway.
