Adam, here is a suggestion... Make that county fair minigame... Where you have to shoot ducks... But instead of ducks, You could use chickens...And in a certain amount of time, you need to shoot all the birds to advance to the next wave...

Here it is... you know... just a little random ideia...

Its not that complicated. If you have MCEdit, and have watched Sethbling, you will probably easily understand when i say that the spawner spawns enteties stacked on top of each other - this time it is a mob stacked on a minecart. Somehow the minecart get pushed (probably of a block), and will move slowly into the lava.
There might be some details i dont have with me, but it should work. ;)
