History
In July 2015, two river cruise ships were initially ordered from Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven for delivery in 2017. The order was extended by two more ships in November 2015.[1] However, the ships were by no means to be identical in design; two 110-meter ships, each for 110 passengers, were to be deployed on the Rhine, Main and Danube rivers under the names Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler, while two smaller ships for up to 84 passengers were to be named Crystal Ravel and Crystal Debussy for deployment in France on the Seine, Garonne and Dordogne rivers, as well as in the Garonne estuary[2].
Construction
Construction began on May 9, 2016, at Lloyd Werft shipyard. The start button of the plasma torch for cutting the first steel section was pressed in the former steel construction hall of the Bremen Vulcan by Edie Rodriguez, CEO and president of the American Crystal Cruises, part of the Genting Group.[3] The bow and stern were built at the steel construction company BVT Bremen in Bremen and Bremerhaven,[4] BVT Bremen, part of the Heinrich Rönner Group, was commissioned by Lloyd Werft to carry out the steel construction work for the four river ships. In addition to BVT's production facilities in Bremen and Bremerhaven, the two eastern German Rönner sites in Roßlau and Boizenburg were also commissioned with the work.[5][6]
Eventually, it was decided that all four ships would be based on the same basic design. Construction of the ships was transferred to MV Werften Wismar. On August 19, 2016, the Crystal Bach and Crystal Mahler were laid down at MV Werften Wismar,[7] followed by the Crystal Ravel and Crystal Debussy on May 24, 2017.[8]
Delivery and commissioning
The Crystal Bach, MV Werften's first completed newbuilding project, was delivered to the shipping company in Wismar on August 3, 2017, and christened in Rüdesheim on August 20, 2017.[9] The second ship of the class, the Crystal Mahler, was delivered on September 20, 2017,[10] and christened in Wismar on the same day. [11] Crystal Debussy was delivered on March 8, 2018,[12] and christened in Amsterdam on May 28, 2018.[13][14] The final ship of the class, Crystal Ravel, was delivered on April 12, 2018,[15] and christened in Budapest on July 11, 2018.[16]
The Maltese-flagged ships operate on the Rhine, Main, Danube and Moselle rivers.
