That's kind of my specialty ^^
I often use banners to make things look more realistic.

The command blocks create particles using the /particle command. There are many different kinds of particles in Minecraft. I used the "flame", "large smoke" and "cloud" particles here.
When a command block executes a /particle command the particle is created at that moment but vanishes after some time. To keep the particle effect steady I had to use repeating command blocks.
Also, you can only generate particles in a cylindrical cone shape due to how the /particle command works.
To make the fire coming out of the exhaust pipes bend backwards, I made 5 small particle clouds in slightly different positions. Every upper one is located more to the back than the one beneath it. This creates the illusion of the fire bending backwards. That also is why there are so many command blocks xD
