The SS Tortuga was built in England in 1820 as the first ship of the SBC.
It had sails as its main propulsion and new experimental steam engines on board and was designed for passenger and cargo traffic between England and America. The ship was in operation for 6 years, during which there were some incidents and repairs that had to be made to the engines and the hull, as the new engines had a few malfunctions and couldn't remain in operation for long. Additionally, the ship lost one of its paddle wheels during a storm. In 1826, after another makeshift repair and on its way to America, it disappeared without a trace for 3 years.
It was not until 1829 that clues were found about what had happened to the Tortuga when a message in a bottle from the ship's officer washed up on the Scottish coast. The message stated that there had been a boiler explosion, and he and 6 others were able to save themselves on a detached lifeboat, drifting aimlessly for several days. He wrote this message one day after the catastrophe. The lifeboat or further evidence of survivors was never found, bringing an end to the story of the Tortuga and its crew.
