This is my entry to the Behind the Picket Fence contest. I've always loved traditional Scandinavian architecture, and so it's been my dream for a while to live in a place like this.
When beginning the project I looked into photography involving Scandinavian houses to give me a good idea for the angles and colours which I might use when adding accents to my home, I ended up finding a good amount of images involving autumn trees which really took my fancy so i got to work making a few designs and shaping some terrain. After that, I made a few platforms at varying heights as I'd discovered on my photography 'adventure' that the key to making more minimalist builds is layering and varying heights to create a desired effect. I went with grey terracotta rather than dark oak for my walls to contrast the white roofs and minor detailing with a simple rich brown rather than a textured block to make the structure stand out from the more messy, textured trees and terrain.
Once I thought I'd finished everything, I went around to each segment of the structure and added a clean interior to compliment the simpleness of the exterior, I ran into a few problems with the lack windows but paintings seemed to work as a bit of a replacement so I decided to not add anymore.
I decided something was missing and added a touch of personality to the build with the lighthouse. I lived on the Cliffs of Dover until I was ten and have always been obsessed with lighthouses so I figured it would work as an accent. I liked how it looked and it also gave more personality to the build so I kept it.
