Das Taj Mahal ist ein in der Grundform quadratisches Mausoleum,
welches nach dem Tod Mumtaz Mahals 1648 fertig gestellt wurde und
von ihrem Gemahl dem damaligen Großmogul Shah Jahan in Auftrag
gegeben wurde.
Das 58 Meter breite und 56 Meter hohe Bauwerk besteht zum Großteil
aus Marmor der mit 28 verschiedenen Edel und Halbedelsteinen
verziert wurde. Interessant ist es das Ahmad Lahori und Abu Fazel,
die führenden Architekten, persische und indischen Elementen
verbanden. So entstand die Grabstätte also im indo-islamischen
Stil.
Das eigentliche Grab befindet sich nicht wie von vielen angenommen
im großen Hauptraum, sondern unter dem Taj Mahal, in der Krypta.
Im Hauptraum des Mausoleums befinden sich zwar auch zwei Gräber
aber das sind nur sogenannte Kenotaphe.
Die an allen Ecken stehenden Minarette sind so konstruiert, dass
sie im Falle eines Erdbebens nicht auf das Hauptgebäude fallen.
Das Taj Mahal wurde 1908 durch die Briten die damals die
Kolonialherrschaft über Indien hatten unter Denkmalschutz
gestellt, heute zählt es zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe.
Zudem ist es eines der wohl bekanntesten Wahrzeichen Indiens und
steht für Toleranz weswegen es eine militärisch bewachte Sperrzone
und strenge Sicherheit Regeln für das Gelände gibt. Dies schreckt
die rund 1 Mio. Besucher die das Mausoleum Jährlich besuchen nicht
ab und so ist es eines der meist betuchtesten Wahrzeichen der Welt.

While being on of the Weven Wonders of the Modern World, it is
called the Crown of the Palace: The Taj Mahal in India. And this,
this is its story:
The Taj Mahal is a Mausoleum with a square foundation, that was
constructed after the death of Mumtaz Mahal in 1648 and ordered
built by the great mogul Shah jahan.
The 58 meters wide and 56 meters high building majorly consists
of marble, which is decorated 28 different gems. The leading
architects, Ahmad Lahori and Abu Fazel combined persian and indian
methods of architecture, which lead to the indian-islamic style
of the cemetery.
The real tomb is not actually located in the main hall, but far
below in the crypt of the Taj Mahal. Eventhough there are two
tombs in the center hall, they are only the so-called Kenotaphe.
The minarets, which are located in the four corners are
constructed in such a way, that they would not fall onto the
main building in case of an earthquake.
The Taj Mahal was put under protection by the British in 1908
during the time of British colonialism. Today, it counts towards
the UNESCO world heritages.
Additionally, it is one of the most well-known symbols of Indian
culture and stands for tolerance, which is why there is strict
safety rules and a prohibited area protected by the military.
This however, does not scare the 1 million annual visitors which
make it one of the most visited places of the world.
