A 1:1 scale recreation of The Blushing Mermaid, a seedy tavern in Baldur's Gate.
Making Of
With almost all of the temples (minus that of Ilmater, which is basically a shack) completed, I decided I wanted to knock out the last major, unique buildings in the city, and nothing was making me more nervous than the Blushing Mermaid. I remembered it as an unusual, rambling building, and one which I figured would be a difficult build no matter how I approached it.
Thankfully, the execution of it wasn't that bad. First I analyzed its design, and found that it's fundamentally a cross-shaped building, almost a house, with two extensions tacked on. Once I realized that, it was a lot less intimidating. The diagonal section I only had one false start building before I had to tweak the design, but with the help of my minimap I was reassured that it looked like the right width, with the design I settled on. Once I had that out of the way, the rest of the building was smooth sailing - I had to add a layer of blocks to each story, which was easy enough with MCEdit, and remove two internal pillars from the design, but thankfully BG's interior matched up quite well with the unusual shape of the building.
For best results, load with 1.2.4/1.2.5 Minecraft. Schematic makes use of half-blocks attached to undersides.
Redistributing it as is, without credit, is a no-no, but if anyone wanting to make a Baldur's Gate themed adventure map would be interested in using it, contact me. I would gladly like to aid such a worthy cause.
The texture pack is naturally my own Baldur's Craft texture pack, in [32x] and [16x].
