BACKGROUND STORY

Greetings, fellow denizens of Planet Minecraft! I am EskimoCanadian4, or EskCan4 for short. I've been playing Minecraft (Java) off and on since Spring 2011. In that time, I've built (and demolished) all sorts of different houses and structures. Whether it was in those long forgotten, singleplayer maps of old, or the equally extinct (and buggy), early multiplayer worlds my pals 'n' I used to roam. Minecraft was a lot more crude in those days. Without installing mods to spice things up a notch, the default game was itself very simple, but incredibly captivating. For me, anyway. I loved building (and wrecking) Mega Block houses when I was small, and Lego has always fascinated me. So, when this game called Minecraft came along with its giant sandbox of virtual building blocks, I soon found myself hooked. But I digress... Over the years, most of my old saved map files have either been lost, corrupted, or carelessly discarded. Today, only one saved world has survived the relentless test of time. And it's this one. Starting in Summer 2015, I began by working on a pair of Twin Towers totally off the cuff. Shortly after the structural completion of the towers, I built a surrounding complex of low level buildings to accompany the twins. My main goal from the very beginning was to just build unrestricted on my own, personalized super-flat canvas world, with unlimited resources, and no distractions from players and / or server crashes to erase any work. And so I did... Block by block... Painstakingly...

I didn't know what I was getting myself into...

Fast forward a number of years, et voilà! What started off as a throwaway, janky building project, slowly morphed into this... modern work of... art, I guess? Not exactly sure if this is considered art or not. You be the judge on that one! My main source of inspiration was none other than New York's former World Trade Center, designed by the late Japanese-American architect Minoru Yamasaki. While I loosely based the project centrepiece off Yamasaki's work, I did not strictly adhere to creating an accurate replica of the real thing. To make a true, 1:1 scale model of the gargantuan WTC complex, in its entirety of 7 buildings, is nearly impossible. Not without some assistance from editing tools, or extra hands. Therefore, the buildings had to be scaled down in size, in order to allow me to actually finish the whole thing in a reasonable time! Over time, I've done numerous renovations on the existing works to renew their sheen. After all, things change. As a creative person, the greatest thrill comes when you are bold enough to improvise and try something new. Sometimes you may not be satisfied with the result. But more often than not, you end up surprising yourself with something real nice! My project has seen dozens upon dozens of iterations come and go. It was rough in the very early days. Slowly, I made gradual refinements in the process of continual improvement. Now, I am proud to present the latest snapshots from New Block City!

MAP OVERVIEW

There's nothing super special about this map in particular. It's merely the product of an overactive imagination, and countless hours spent doodling in Minecraft. Moreover, minimal planning actually went into the overall grand scheme. Everything was basically improvised as I went along. Most of the fine details conveniently fell into place, as if I had planned it all out, when in fact I did not. For the most part, I like to build semi-realistic, boxlike structures with ornamental exteriors and built-out interiors. If there's one thing that triggers me the most, it's those dreaded hollow buildings! The ones where all the details are put on the outside, but nothing's done inside. To me, they are nothing but empty shells which shows little or no character. Every single building in my map contains finished interior spaces. In select buildings, plenty of empty floor space remains for custom design floor plans to be made. I originally posted a much older copy of my project on the Minecraft Forum, which can be viewed here ... It has since become the top-viewed "Twin Towers" page on the forum. However, since that forum thread is 5 years out of date, and since Planet Minecraft is objectively better than the Minecraft Forum, I am effectively relaunching a major update here as the Twin Towers II, in hopes to gain some feedback from people. If enough interest is shown in the project, I may consider releasing my latest build to the community for their enjoyment.
