History up to November 1908:

The Tsukuba-class were a pair of large armored cruisers used by the Imperial Japanese Navy. They were ordered as part of the 1904 Fleet Emergency Replenishment during the Russo Japanese War although they were not yet complete by the time the war ended. Both ships were built at the Kure Naval Arsenal. Despite being “Armored Cruisers”, they were as large as the battleships of the 1st Fleet and are equipped with 12-inch main guns which are also the main armament of the battleships. Tsukuba was commissioned on 14th January 1907 while Ikoma was commissioned on 24th March 1908. Both ships were named after Mount Tsukuba and Mount Ikoma respectively.

Tsukuba went on a voyage around the world after her commissioning, she visited Jamestown in the United States and Portsmouth in England. She escorted the United States Navy’s Great White Fleet on its visit to Japan on October 1908 and participated in the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers. She was present in the Imperial Naval Review at Kobe, Japan and is part of the 2nd Division of the 2nd Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Shigeto Dewa. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Katsuhiko Hirose from the 10th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who commanded the ship since 15th September 1908.

Ikoma escorted the United States Navy’s Great White Fleet on its visit to Japan on October 1908 and participated in the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers. She was present in the Imperial Naval Review at Kobe, Japan and is part of the 2nd Division of the 2nd Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Shigeto Dewa. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Tokuya Kamiizumi from the 12th class of the Imperial Naval Academy, he will be replaced by his classmate Captain Rinroku Eguchi who is currently the Chief of Staff of Takeshiki Guard District.
