Glenwys looked on, eyes boring into the sneering crowd before her. Their disgusted looks answered back, a sea of masked faces, but she held her head up high. Convict her of witchcraft. Fine. But she wasn't going to let them break her, let them win.
"On this day, at high noon, Glenwys Elford, Daughter of Nicholas Elford, is sentenced to death on the pyre! We do not welcome witches and their wicked ways. Let this be a lesson to your otherkin." The executioner proclaimed. The crowd jeered, a tomato smashing itself messily onto Glenwys's face. She scowled but returned the stare evenly.
Smoke filled her face as the bundle of logs was lit, the crackling seeming like endless laughter in her ears. A cough, as she felt the heat rising to her dangling feet. She was going to be cooked alive.
Glenwys wasn't afraid of death. She was terrified. But also...angry. Angry that she was falsely accused, angry she couldn't defend herself, angry that no one seemed to care. Nothing in this wretched world was fair. If this was how she would go, then at least she would die with dignity.
"GLEN!" A shrill voice cut through the smoke, and her stomach dropped an empty void it once was. Mother.
No. Please. She didn't deserve to see this.
Against her will, her eyes scanned, frantically searching for the voice. There. Hidden among the edges of the crowd, clawing her way forward was the tiniest bundle of a woman, growing as she neared.
"Halt! Do not proceed further!" A guard thrust his hand out towards her mother as she reached the edge of the wooden stage. Ironic. The order was enforced during execution.
Mother angrily attempted to shove the mass of metal out of her way. A futile effort. Instead, she was shoved back, toppling over onto the cobblestone floors. "One more move and you'll join your daughter in heaven." The guard sneered, spitting on her fallen form. "Witch breeder."
Lunging forward, Mother ignored the jeers, the looming threat of the guard as she clambered up on the stage. "Glen, oh Glen...my child...Mom is here..." Her eyes fixed on putting out the flames.
Thud.
An arrow buried itself into Mother', right in her gut.
She released a small gasp before toppling forward, her blood already pooling around her.
Glenwys couldn't feel her feet anymore, consumed by the flames. But she couldn't care less. The plan had been to keep her dignity while she died. But not to see her mother sent to death's embrace. "Mother!" Glenwys screamed, voice hoarse. She viciously tugged at the rope, frantically, desperately attempting to release herself.
"Glen..." Mother's voice croaked, already weaker. God, there was blood everywhere. Was it a barbed arrow? Why would anyone shoot something so vicious at a civilian? "Glen..." She whispered hoarsely.
Glenwys met her eyes, tear-filled as she helplessly stood bound to the barbed post, her mother dying at her feet. Why? Why? Why? Why? WHY?
Punish her. Fine.
Her mother was innocent.

"I'm sorry. I'll see you soon," her mother whispered with a sad smile. Then went slack, as she drew her last breath and died.

"See you soon, mother." Tears dripped endlessly as Glenwys closed her eyes, waiting for the sweet embrace of death.
