this is my entry for Nitgo's Aliens vs Astronauts contest!
From The Jade Convocation Files, no. 283-e1:
"The Egi are an alien race from the planet Egion in the Beruta galaxy. The Egi are bipedal, warm-blooded, sentient beings that come in several skin shades, with redish-pink (seen here) being the most common. A white appendage comes out behind their head and falls over and then down, like a tail. The length of this cartilage mass varies heavily, with some ending before it reaches the nape of the neck, and others all the way down to their ankles. They have very little actual bone tissue, with their skeletons believed to be made up of the mineral corundum. It seems strange to have a skeleton made up of crystal, but this is a feature that many species on Egion share, as the planet's surface is made of 82% corundum deposits, with the remaining 18% being water and small fertile areas of soil where plants can grow. Having theses corundum skeletons leads to the Egi being stiff in their movements, but they are not to be underestimated--they are not slow, and move at an average speed of 10 k/m per hour on foot--significantly faster than terrans. Their crystal skeletons also mean that they are very sturdy, and while these bones can be broken, it certainly isn't easy to do so, particularly when you compare it to the terran body. Egi also have hard sections of white skin on their foreheads that directly covers a hard plate of corundum, thought to be evolved to protect the brain from blunt force damage. This plate, in combination with small but sharp horns on either side of it, make the front of the Egi's head a very dangerous area. It can essentially be used as a battering ram, headbutting any target in melee distance and causing quite a bit of damage.
Culturally, the Egi are a very defensive and xenophobic society. It is rare that they establish contact with any outside species, and so not much is known about how their society functions. They seem to be led by a council of experienced individuals--warriors, scientists...those who are leaders in their field of work. This council seems to have a great deal of authority in many different aspects of life. Not much else is known about them, however; we also do not know if the Egi as a whole are happy being ruled over by this council or not. What we do know is that the Egi have a strong military that is a serious threat to consider when undertaking projects on the nearby planets in the Beruta galaxy. Egi naval fleets have been known to attack any ships flying too close to their home planet, and full on invasions of nearby colonies are common. They are a very dangerous threat to further exploration and settlement of the Beruta galaxy, and are to be monitored closely.
