After the Soviet Union declared war on Finland in late 1939, the Finnish Army found themselves in a very bad position. They realized that the high number of Soviet troops as well as their large amount of tanks would make any conventional battle an easy Soviet victory. Their solution was to use shock troops and snipers to slow the Russians. Clad in a snow colored uniform, these troops sniped Soviet commanders as well as the basic Russian foot soldiers. Unlike most special forces of the war such as he SOE ans OSS, the Finns used less conventional weapons to slow the Soviet advance. They used Molotov Cocktails, a flammable bottle that worked like a grenade, to slow tanks. They also used sub-machine guns such as the "Suomi 9mm" to snipe. They even used skies as a method of transport to make hit and run attacks. The result of this kind of warfare was a bitter stalemate. By the end of the war, the Soviets were not able to take over, although they were able to take a small part of Finnish territory. Because most of the war was fought in the snow, it is now known as the "Winter War". However, many see it as yet another front of the Second World War.
