Fun Fact about the actual IJN Maya, there was a monkey on board her, and the air crew trained the monkey to salute them while an officer would walk by.

To add onto this, after Maya got out of the 1944 Battle of the Philippine Sea, she retreated back to Yokusuka to disembark the air crew (and the monkey, sadly). Fortunately, this means the monkey was spared, due to Maya's sinking near Palawan.
