The Little Penguin, also known as Little Blue Penguin, Blue Penguin, Korora and Fairy Penguin is the worlds smallest species of penguin.
These birds can be found around the coasts of New Zealand and Australia.
The genetic distinctions between populations are very muddy currently, there is a lot of debate about subspecies, where subspecies borders lie or if some populations should be considered separate species entirely or if we should just lump em all into one species.
Some examples are:
- Weather the Australian and Southern South Island populations are the same subspecies
- If the White-flippered variety are a subspecies or separate species
- If the Australian populations are a separate species, and if they're the same as the southern south island does that mean NZ has more than 1 species?
- How many subspecies are just hybrids of other subspecies
- etc, etc
Because these birds can move around so much, defining where a population lies is pretty much redundant as they constantly overlap and dead birds wash up in places you wouldn't expect all the time.
The Little Penguin is a taxonomic anomaly.
