this is my entry for PMC's dark depths competition uwu

so what is it?

this is inspired by your typical glow squid as well as various corpses!!
(don't worry, i googled Tim Burton's Corpse bride, I'm not going crazy XD)

a little back story to this then uwu

Well, this creature's name translates from Latin as 'Light death' or 'dying light'! It's a mutation of dead bodies found at the depths of the ocean and of course, the beautiful, luminescent firefly squids. Most of the time, firefly squids live a long happy life and die in peace. There can be a few exceptions though. Rarely, these squids develop disabilities, disabling them from surviving a full life. For years they have tried adapting and for filling their life expectancy but failed within months becoming the new meal for it's friends and family. While this may seem a disgusting way of life, there have been new discoveries. Discoveries of this adaption, mutation and creation.

This glow squid has discovered the ability to live by inhabiting a human corpse. With organs still intact, it provides the squid with a suitable figure, keeping it alive for a much longer amount of time! The glow squid has control over the body as it acts as the brain, controlling the nerves and limbs of it, even if it does have some difficulty.

As you can see, the creature seems quite chaotic, with neon tentacles every where and tattered clothes but it wouldn't hurt you in anyway unless threatened.

This mutant also has an eyeball on it's head. this is a form of mutation that can occur as a side effect of becoming a part of a human corpse. In order to become the same living organism, it must go through a process of changing living styles, eating, hunting, movement and activity. Side affects of possessing a human body can be additional limbs, amnesia, hostility and on very rare occasions fatal illnesses from a failed attempt.

While it does have control over the body there are still flaws. The nerves, the ability to express emotion, total control over limbs, etc. As the corpse is mainly the squid's body, this means it does not have much need for limbs nor will it be able to completely control any actions. This is because it does not contain the original brain, intact, undamaged and working. But if it were, there would be no corpse, just a struggling person in the middle of the ocean XD It does not show any emotion through this corpse either. It can, however, very rarely change its colour for mating and extreme emotion. Red for hostility, Green to warn others, pink to show deep interest or desire and blue as a neutrality.

Life expectancy - 6 months
Normal Firefly squid Life expectancy (without disability or mutation) - 1 year
A squid born with a certain disability will die within 3 months maximum, or even within minutes of being born.
