Michael (Μιχαήλ) V was a Byzantine and Eastern Roman emperor of the 11th century. He was the nephew of Michael IV and succeeded him. He was known for banishing his mother, Zoe Porphyrogenniti for attempting to poison him, but a mob forced him to reinstate her. His reign was a short and unpleasant one. He was given the epithet of "The Caulker" (Καλαφάτης) as that was his father's occupation.
