Another bird native to both New Zealand and Australia.
These odd looking birds can be found around estuaries, rivers and habours.
Feeding on fish, crustaceans and aquatic insects. And if any around, frogs.
Spoonbills find prey by dragging, probing, sifting, grabbing, etc along the sediment underwater, using vibration detectors inside of their spoon shaped bill.
Once they've found their prey, the bird snaps shut it's bill, lifts it's head upwards and allows the food to slide on down. Yummy!
Royal Spoonbills colonised New Zealand from Australia, first sighted in 1861 and first recorded breeding in 1949.
