This skin is dedicated to the Independence Day of the United States.

A Brief History of Independence Day:

In the 18th century, North America was ruled from London. At that time, it consisted of thirteen colonies: the province of New Hampshire, the province of Massachusetts Bay, the colony of Rhode Island and the Providence plantation, the colony of Connecticut, the province of New York, the province of New Jersey, the province of Pennsylvania, the Delaware colony, the province of Maryland, the colony Virginia, the provinces of North Carolina, the provinces of South Carolina and the provinces of Georgia. By the way, it was in this order that the colonies signed the Declaration of Independence subsequently.

The colonies were founded by Great Britain. They consisted mainly of agricultural land and brought a lot of profit to the British, including through tobacco plantations. Over time, the colonists began to protest the exploitation and demand independence.

In 1765, the British government approved the Stamp Act or Stamp Act. It was adopted in relation to the colonies of North America and obliged them to print a number of materials (contracts, newspapers, playing cards, etc.) exclusively on stamp paper, which was produced in London. The colonies were also subject to a stamp duty, which had to be paid exclusively in British currency (that is, in gold or silver coins, not in the money that the colonists printed).

The act was adopted in order to replenish the treasury of Great Britain, which was empty after the Seven Years' War, as well as to compensate for the costs associated with protecting the colonists and their borders from Indian raids.

However, he provoked large-scale unrest and protests in the colonies. The colonies did not have their own representatives in the British Parliament - and, accordingly, it was not possible to influence the nature and structure of taxation. This led to protests on the city streets and even to the destruction of the lieutenant governor's mansion in Boston.

Britain was forced to back down and annulled the law in 1766. But the conflicts didn't end there.

In 1773, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act. His main goal was to reduce the huge stocks of tea that were stored in the London warehouses of the East India Company - one of the most important commercial institutions in Britain at that time. According to the law, the company was able to export tea to the colonies at its own expense. At the same time, all tea was subject to a Townsend duty of three pence.

In this way, the government planned to get more profit from the colonists and retain the right to tax the colonies. However, in order to avoid conflicts, the East India Company decided to hide this tax: that is, to pay it in London after the tea was unloaded in the colonies or after the sale of tea. It failed to do so.

The inhabitants of the colonies learned about the Tea Law and its details and protested. An organization called the Sons of Liberty began an educational campaign, educating the colonists about the law.

In addition to this, they staged a protest that went down in history as the Boston Tea Party. To do this, members of the organization dressed up as Native Americans and poured a whole batch of tea imported from the UK into the city harbour.

The severity of the acts was noted even by those colonists who had not previously taken an active part in the protests. The previously disparate colonies united to convene the First Continental Congress, which resulted in the Declaration of Rights and Grievances, as well as a decision to prohibit the purchase of English goods and the prohibition of trade with the British in general.

The Second Continental Congress convened on May 10, 1775. It was he who assumed the role of the government of the newly formed country during the American War of Independence.

The Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Its design was created by the Committee of Five: Roger Sherman, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Robert R. Livingston under the direction of Thomas Jefferson. The draft Declaration affirmed the rights of citizens, including their right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness", and also emphasized that "all men are created equal".

The draft was submitted to Congress on June 28, 1776. The Declaration of Independence was voted on July 2, and it was officially ratified on July 4, the day that Americans now call Independence Day.

For the first time, the Declaration was read in the squares of Philadelphia, and celebrated by kindling bonfires and ringing bells. Only in 1777 did the official celebration of the Independence Day of the United States take place. It happened in Bristol County, Rhode Island: the soldiers fired 13 shots from a gun in the morning and in the evening.

In 1870, the US Congress declared July 4th an unpaid holiday for all federal employees. However, since 1938 July 4 has been declared a paid holiday.

Happy Independence Day!
