I happen to use many programs to shade my skin. I rarely use the miners need cool shoe's website (new one) to shade basess i have already created. For beginners, that program is awesome, as long as you don't steal other skins. Another program i happen to use alot is SkinEdit. SkinEdit is a downloaded file, and is somewhat close to another program called MCSkin3D. SkinEdit is another shading program I recommend. MCSkin3D is what many people are using, so I guess it's an awesome thing to use to shade your skin.

I happen to shade my skin by first making a base. You do that just so you have an idea of what you're going to do. What I obviously do first is do darker pixel to a lighter pixel. For the eyes, it's the same thing. I hope this helps, if not, I might make a tutorial.
