The Hoiho or Yellow-eyed Penguin is a bird endemic to the South Island and various offshore islands of New Zealand.

Unfortunately, like many of our species the Yellow-eyed Penguin is listed as an endangered species.
Reasons for their decline are introduced predators such as rats and stoats, disturbance to nesting sites by tourists and commercial fishing.

These birds occur on the New Zealand $5 bill and were the winners of Bird of the Year 2019
