(chapter one of a story I'm writing)
Who am I? That’s a good question. Unfortunately, I don’t know. The Girl in the Mirror and Sparrow are two different things. I am not able to know who I am. I can tell you, I’m a girl, I’m a warrior, and I’m a Runaway. Why have I become a Runaway? Because I am a Legacy Bird. Yes, I am human. That doesn’t change my status as a Legacy Bird though. When I look in the mirror, I see a girl with a long feather-shaped scar running down her sceptical expressioned face. She is pale and freckled and dark-eyed. She has long deep red hair that runs down, crazy but organised. It’s thick and blows wildly in the wind. This girl is me, but not. She’s Carmen. The girl in the mirror. But I am Sparrow. And I am Carmen at the same time. Nightbird falls on Carmen’s reflection, as well as my shoulder. But I only see their colours in the reflection. Nightbird is dark during the day. I pull my red oversized jacket over my shoulders. It fits fine for an “oversized” jacket. Nightbird’s feathers start to glow. It’s night. But not just any night. It’s the Night of Nightbird. When they sing the song to reveal a full moon. By confusing the world with Illusionaires and Magic, as well as Trickery, they confuse everything until it spins, calling orbits around masses. I’m not allowed to watch Nightbird’s song, or I may permanently confuse everything. So I call my Feathers and Vanish. Like I never existed.

Two
A Witch of Deception and Birds
Well, you know who Carmen is, but I suppose you’re wondering who Sparrow is, along with what Feathers are and how I Vanished. I am a Legacy Bird. I mentioned that earlier. Sparrow is a sorceress. Legacy Birds automatically are magically talented. I can stun enemies with my singing voice, I can fly, and I can summon Feathers that teleport somewhere else. I Vanished to my friend Cora’s house. She’s with her girlfriend Sonia. I am a third wheel. They’re both Bi, and I respect that, but sometimes I feel they try to over complicate everything’s romantic lives.
Cora runs over to me, Charlie and Bert (her dogs) at her heels. I remember, last time I made a promise. I swore to her that I would get a pet the next time I came over. I’m not in need of a new companion. Sonia lowers her eyes and waves to me. I nod. I quickly grab the hat I left here last time and put it on my head. It’s a bit big, but it’s mine and mine solely, unstolen.
I sigh and walk with Cora to the pet stop. I look around. There was a reason I didn’t want to come here. It’s not that I don’t want one, I really do, but my weakness is wanting them all. They’re all alone and all helpless and all unloved. Like me. One cat seems to avoid my eye. She carefully steals at the show animals' food for herself. I like this cat. I take her with me. Nightbird isn’t going to like this. While Cora helps me figure out a name, Sonia is playing cards. With my cat. And being beaten. I grin, a rare sight.
At the worst time, I suddenly remember, I must go to my friend Brielle’s house to unlock the chaotic monster of humour and pure silliness so I keep my mysterious aspect at the ready. Some people may have their guards up. I leave the cat at Cora’s and Vanish, spending the rest of the night drunk on sugar.
