You are in the middle of nowhere. Only thing you see is trees, and more trees. Luckily there is food around, meat!
Not far from spawn, you'll find cottage sitting at a hill in a clearing with small water area. There is also an underground cave system with resources and lots of mobs ofcourse. You have safe place to rest as there is somekind of cave fortress builded

Side note: Apoligies as the small castle thingy ain't done, yet. Been stuck with it several months now. Rebuilding too many times, just can not get to be what i want. Too lazy to remove it from this upload

Be carefull when exploring the cave system. In the area around the cottage, around something like 700x700 blocks, there is up to 10 mob spawners. In the MCEdit pic, you'll find at least three.. You can use MCEdit to remove the glowstone from the caves or leave them
