MCEdit should works you only have to create a region no commands just easy

Thats something I always wondered about too.
By the way is there any method to check how many blocks of different materials your creation contains without using McEdit?

Select the area of your creation.

//distr will tell you what blocks you have (and how many of each)
//size will tell you the XYZ area. X*Y*Z=total volume of the area

Size total volume minus air amount from distr would also tell you how many physical blocks in the area. You could also minus off stuff like dirt, grass, stone etc if you wanted to know how much you built compared to the landscape that you built upon

Requires some very basic maths, but that's what your computers calculator is for.
