Underwater
By interlude_vi
You gave me this thing,
This thing called love
I was so naïve,
To think it was the truth
You pulled me underwater,
Underwater
It’s so new to me,
What even is love?
Is it supposed to hurt,
Or make my heart burnt
You promised me the world,
With your so called true love
And now I’m being pulled,
Underwater
Your chains keep me under,
I can’t break free
My heart is too broken,
Too broken to see
One moment you were there,
The next you were gone
How can I escape?
Being pulled underwater,
Underwater
Why would you do this?
It’s still all too much,
I didn’t even know,
What love really was
You still keep me,
Underwater
It’s getting harder to breathe,
Every second your not with me
And now I can’t even see,
The light outside the cold
I’m still underwater,
All because of you,
Being pulled Underwater,
Underwater
Tell me why you don’t go away,
Your still in my mind
Let me break free from this,
These puppet strings you hold me to
Dragging me down deeper,
Still underwater,
Pulling me under,
Underwater
Can’t you see?
Look at what you did?
How can you leave?
All the times I spent with you?
I’m being pulled under,
Underwater
My final breaths,
They hurt the most
What happens next?
How can I escape,
Underwater
Author's Note:
I'm not gonna lie, when I saw the theme for this contest, I had no idea what to write. Honestly, this idea of fake love, and being stuck in a toxic relationship sprouted out of my mind, since I've struggled with somewhat of the same thing. I've struggled with fake friends, and people that made me feel like I was swimming in cold, dark water all the time. That's where the idea of being pulled underwater by someone came from. In this poem, it's about love, but it's about what love does to us when it's not as perfect as we imagined it. The person in this poem is being pulled underwater by someone who broke her heart, and lied to her. I hope I captured a toxic relationship well, and you can see what the poem is about! I also hope this counts for the contest theme! ♥
Artist's Statement:
For the artwork I drew for the poem, it's a girl falling deeper and deeper into water, and ocean of some sort. The lines coming from her hands and legs are the "puppet ropes" mentioned in the poem. Her heart, the red glow coming from her chest, is broken, and pieces are floating back up to the person she thought she loved. I had fun with this one, so I hope you guys like it too! ♥
