As a lot of you know, the new 1.4 update is coming out soon! This is their second Halloween (offical) update too! Mojang changed the release date from October 25th, to October 24th so people can get that feel of the new update before Halloween comes. There are many new exciting things in this update but what does that mean to previous updates and servers, adventure maps, mods and what's new and exciting.
Servers:
Since the new update is coming out, many new things will be added. This also means that servers will need new plugins, coding and everything you need to run one. If you love a server but really want to play 1.4 you will either have to wait or duplicate your Minecraft folder and run each one separately. It will be around 1-3 weeks before half of the plugins are updated so except to see alot of servers down and many not updated.
Adventure Maps:
A lot of adventure maps work with a specific version because of different coding for blocks and texture packs. If you have a list of adventure maps you want to play, don't update and continue. Many maps won't work because some key features to them are redstone: lots of time blocks coding change and say different things about redstone, and texture packs: There will need to be new and updated texture packs or else they might not work.
Mods:
If you are a modder then you should look at the snapshot or get the early full release and start coding now so you can finish before/or right after it comes out so people don't forget or get bored with your mod because of all the buzz going around. If you love mods and have a lot of them, then you aren't going to be able to update without deleting your mods because 1) they won't work unless they are made specifically to do so like work for 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4. 2) If they are not compatible, it will crash your game and you will need to change your folder. This happens because the coding is meant for the version you have, not 1.4.
Features:
The Wither: A new mini-boss you get by building an iron golem out of soul sand, and on each top block, place a wither head.
Heads: You can now get heads and wear them. You can change coding around so they can be peoples skins.
Night vision potion: You can see in the night.
Withers: Black skeletons in the Nether.
Beacons: hard to obtain, gives you buffs when around.
Item Frames: Fram some diamonds on the wall.
Pots: Throw some pots, get some rupees or plant saplings and flowers.
Carrot on a stick: Saddles are now useful.
Potatoes/carrots/pumpkin pie/and more: More food and new seeds.
Armored Zombies/skeletons/pigmen: They now have armor and have a greater chance of dropping the armor that they wear. They also wear enchanted items sometimes.
Zombie Villagers: Villagers can now become infected. There is a cure. I haven't seen the cure.

ZOmbies pick up your armor and sword if u die and wear them. They drop them again if killed.
