If you've not been trying out all the new features on the snapshots, or have been somehow been avoiding all the talk about the update, then chances are you won't know what those strange, blocky mob things up there are. Well, they're mob heads.
What are they?
They're basically pretty looking things that make good decor and don't really serve much of a purpose. I suppose you could probably use them to build a house or something, although it might look a little... strange...
How do I get one?
You can get a Wither skeleton head by killing, well... a Wither skeleton. Sadly, for some reason unknown to humanity, Mojang decided that you could only get the other mob heads by using creative. I hope that changes at some point in the future, it seems like it should be like that now really.
So, what do they do exactly?
Well, they can be placed in one of sixteen ways, or they can be worn as a hat (like a pumpkin). Using three Wither skeleton skulls, you can also spawn a Wither in - although do so in a controlled environment (they like to destroy stuff)!
That Steve head... It's dull. Is there any way I could make it look like me?
Yep, although it can't be done without an external program right now, so you can only do so in single player, and with a bit of confidence.
[Link to tutorial will go here when complete - it'll be out in the next day or so, I promise :3]
My verdict
I love how the skulls look, and I think that they're a great addition to Minecraft. It's a shame that you can only legitimately get the Wither skeleton one right now though, although hopefully that'll change in the future.
The Steve skulls have so much potential too, especially if server owners can find a way to alter how they work. Imagine automatically getting a skull of the person you killed when playing on multiplayer! Trophy wall anyone?
