There was fire. I remember that. I remember the smell, the smell of defeat. The Kythos had been in war with us for over a decade before they decided it was time to step up their game. I remember the faces as the called for me, the coward that ran off by himself as they asked for help. I remember the screams. And how they still follow me today. Sometimes when I’m mining in the dark, I hear them. They taunt me, they haunt me. I remember the fire. The fire.
The fire took them from me.
I returned 4 days later. The ashes covered the floor like a silk blanket, pushing away as I walked towards it. Everything was gone. Our town, our people, my life, reduced to merely ashes. Not a soul survived. No a soul, but me. Why me? I never passed crafting school, potion making, or even fighting classes. Everyone else (save for children) was way above my skillset, and yet they all died. Even a few Kythos soldiers had been lying motionless on the ground. Light tapping sounds came from behind me. I turned around, hoping for the best. Standing behind me was Aunt Sheila, face burnt, hands darkened. She whispered two words, “It was-“before collapsing to the ground. I stood there, once again in fear. As if the slightest movement would end the world. When I finally did manage to move, it was to fall on my knees. Unfortunately, the world didn’t end right then.
But I wish it did.
The family house I lived in was hardly even a shelter any more, but one thing was still intact. It was the safe my father had told me never to touch. I wouldn’t, but he’s no longer here, so I approached the safe. I knew the code for it, despite how hard dad tried to hide it, he’d always recite it in his sleep. And even so I never got the courage to look at it. 7-15-0-19-20-5-22-5. I entered all the numbers, but paused at 22. Something didn’t feel right. Something was wrong. Not wanting to coward out again, I entered the last two numbers.
The rest wasn't saved, but I'll get it up asap
