So everyone who has ever run/owned a server knows just how had it is to draw in those new players, so i thought i would do my lil bit to help out :).
ADVERTISEMENT
So first things first ADVERTISEMENT this is by far the most important aspect of "getting your server out there" so there are two main types of advertisement you have the "free" and the "paid". So for your basic free advertisement what you want to do is make it STAND OUT have a catchy name and maybe even a slogan, also most big minecraft website allow you to advertise your minecraft server with a banner. So what is a banner? a banner is a image that is displayed with your server it is in this tiny picture that you have to attract you player with, so make it attractive make words fly around make it bright and colorful you need it to attract the players eye. Also with your server you are always given the option to give a brief description, so once players look at your server they can get a basic feel for what you offer and what type of server you run, if there is one thing i learnt from this is that you should never half ass your description tell people what you have to offer that other's don't and why they should pick your server over others. Ok the second type is paid (Only use this if you have some spare cash to put into your server) so on site such as this you can display your banner for thousands of people to see and once they click it they get taken to your site. all of these advertisement's are handled by a separate company called project wonderful. for more info just Google them :) (Never spam other servers as tempting as it is you should never, making enemy's is not a good thing, not only that it makes your server look bad and you don't want a bad rep).
SPAWN
Ok so now people know your server exist but every time someone joins they leave, and you just sit there stumped thinking well whats wrong? Ok you need to make your server appealing to people when they join they don't want a ugly server with a 10 minute spawn it puts people off, you need to make it look nice, so one day when you get the time white-list your server get you and all your mods and admins on and give your server a makeover make so that when people join the server they go WOW i want to be a part of this server. remember your spawn may not mean much to you but when people join your server and stay it makes all the difference.
BUKKIT
Ok so we all know that after a 2 hour gaming session on minecraft it can get slightly...well boring so make your server different with bukkit and the vast amount of plugins they offer, give your players thing to do. with plugins it will keep your players busy and most of all happy, plugins don't only have to be for players either you can get plugins to make your job as owner easier, just a thew I HIGHLY recommend are world edit, world guard, essentials, (a form of economy), chestshop and a rank plugin something like group manager, permissionsEX...ETC.
SPAMMERS
Ok so we have your server on advertisement website's, you have a nice spawn and you got all the plugins to make you and your players happy, you have started to get get a decent amount of player maybe 8-12 at a time and you feel good for yourself. Then one day MR.SPAM joins your server and the first thing he does is spams another server and you loose 2-3 of you players, so you are P.O. You needs to stop these A.S.A.P there are two easy tools at your disposal the first one is spam guard a VERY useful plugin which will prevent 99% of spam and stop him from flooding your chat but that will not block MR.SPAM'S ip so your other plugins should be antipub, Antipub is a amazing plugin which will prevent people from post IPv4 address on your server and any host names that they may use.
THE WAITING GAME
Ok so now you ready to sit back and watch your server grow, this is the best part of being the owner all you hard work and hours of configuration finally pays off. You have maybe 1-3 new players each day and you feel great because you know you are providing a server that is safe and friendly for people to play on and its all thanks to you.
