I have been playing minecraft for quite a while. In fact, I think I started just after infdev. Through that time, I have seen a lot of factions servers, as well as a lot of servers with good communities which ruined them by including factions, or some other type of PVP land claiming. A lot of times, the simpleness of factions servers is a little more attractive to immature players.
Now, don't get me wrong. I have Nothing at all against young players, or that aspect of the community. I would even argue that without that age group, Minecraft would certainly not have become so universal and iconic. However, I do think that servers, especially factions servers, should make more attempts at either appealing to more mature communities or enforcing rules to make their servers more mature.
Let me give you a few rules players can follow on PVP servers, that i have learned from personal experience:
Rule #1: Be respectful to new players, because they keep the server alive.

It really just astounds me that people are so awful to new players. Sometimes I will see on factions servers kids in full diamond armor just sitting in spawn waiting for unarmed new players to come in and their first impression of the server is not being able to even leave the spawn area because there are people waiting there. It doesn't matter if you're impressed with yourself over getting armor in a video game (which, by the way, is ridiculous, because anyone can mine for and get diamonds) Not only this, but a lot of people who DDoS servers and who make spam/flood attacks do so because someone did something abusive, etc. within the first few minutes of them joining the server. This rule goes equally for players in staff positions on servers. It may not seem like that big of a deal but there have been many servers I have joined and almost immediately left because an admin did something abusive. Here's a neat little sub-list of things admins should follow regarding new players:
  1. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER give players items. This means ANY items, even building materials. They all do the same thing, which is to devalue the server and the act of earning items on it. Giving people things when they ask for them, expecting them not to ask again and not to be angry when you say no isn't exactly the best logic.
  2. Be inclusive. Don't make new players feel left out. If there aren't a lot of players on, and none of the other players are talking to someone who just joined, send him/her a quick hello. This also goes for players on servers. Say something like 'Welcome!' to a player when he/she joins. Trust me, it helps a lot.

  3. Answer questions promptly and completely. Don't be vague with your answers, and answer all the questions which aren't expressly covered in the rules. It's never a good idea to make players feel stupid, because as long as they don't ask something not expressly covered, they're asking valid questions.
  4. Don't flaunt the banhammer. I can't even tell you how many times I've had ban threats for mundane reasons, like this one time I got angry at an admin for blowing up my faction base with /nuke, which was, in fact, an indignation shared by many of my friends. I told him that he was abusing and he ought not even be staff and he replied with "Respect admins. First warning." If you mess up as a staff member, it's your bad. You can't blame that on anyone else, and you ought to just take the blame solely on your own fault, not threaten others to enact punishment for pointing out your faults. I admit I gave a rather extreme scenario, but things like that happen and it pisses everyone off on a server.

  5. Don't TP people ever without telling them before, especially when they are new. This can be really really really disorienting to new players and anyone, really, and it's especially bad when they are trying to get their bearings on the server. It's just ridiculous that people will do this, especially because people just joining the server are more interested in getting started on the server and setting up a position socially and physically and less so in seeing what you have to show them at that moment, but it happens a lot.
But I probably missed a lot with this.
    What do you guys think?
