Alright, yes, there are a lot of these kinds of blogs around recently. And there is a reason for that. Diamonds and XP in PlanetMinecraft are unique, but also slightly broken. Not by the programmers and the people who make PMC tick, but by the population. By you. So I'm just gonna jump right in.

Diamonds; People desire these little aqua beauties. As the most valuable item in MineCraft, diamonds serve as a marker to show how much support your posts get on PMC. And giving them shows your support for other creators out there. Which is good, right? Well, in theory, yes. But really, that hasn't quite become the case.

In a sense, PMC is kinda like YouTube. The diamonds are similar to 'liking' a video. By liking a video, you show support for it. But YouTube is very much divided. There are popular videos, and videos that aren't quite as popular, and videos that don't get noticed at all, regardless of quality. There can be amazing videos in YouTube that you never knew existed because YouTube likes to point you towards videos that already have high-earning channels, or videos that in themselves, have a high amount of views, likes, comments, whatever. By doing that, YouTube subconsciously takes away potential traffic to lesser-known channels and creators.

In PMC, Diamonds are beginning to represent popularity within the fan-base. Higher leveled users generally have more diamonds and more subscribers, but that is understandable, as like anyone, they acquire subscribers and diamonds throughout their voyage to level up. And that makes sense. What doesn't, is when a member will have been around for the same time, if not longer than the higher-leveled member, and produce a nearly identical level of skill, or sometimes even greater level, but still be struggling to reach level five, or six, or so on. And why is this?

Members like to stick around to people they like. And I understand this. I'm no different. There are members I do like, and will support with pride. But often times, members don't pay attention to the lesser known users, and/or will judge the amount of skill of their post based on the user's level, and will often times be rude about it, posting comments such as "Stolen skin." or "This idea belongs to someone else, you copied it." or other hateful stuff like that, when most of the time, the user could simply be new to PlanetMinecraft, but be familiar with skinning programs, or had been on sites like SkinDex, or NovaSkin. Just because they are new doesn't mean they are completely unskilled.

Well known users, especially those known to hang around the chat when not playing MineCraft, creating, or other things are known to be some of the users to develop large fan-bases. Such as TheArtist, MusaTheLegend, and La_Pixel have made their dynasty off of skinning. And that's fine and all, I've got nothing against skin makers, but, their fanbases are so large, but so centered around them, that these members often get pop-reel almost instantly with every new skin they post. Now, this is good for skinners like them, and fans of those users, but it also has a negative effect too. Lesser known PMC'ers have much less of a chance getting on the reel themselves, and with that, stay in the dark longer. Now some people would be going "Yea, so what. If they wanted pop reel, they should have made a better skin." Well, to rebuttal, yes, sometimes the user does have a post of lower quality. But that could be in the process of learning. Most members did not join this site at the same level they are now. If you did, good for you. (You've learned absolutely nothing!) But sometimes the post is comparable to that of a 'professional' skinner, or modmaker, or builder, or hell, even better! Now I know I'm stressing that a lot, maybe even way too much, but that's because it happens way too much!

Not only that, but a lot of the time, players will ignore lesser-known users because of their levels. And that brings me to my next topic, experience points.

XP; XP, exp, experience points, whatever they are to you, XP is the obvious reward and intensive to post and post and post onto PMC. It raises your level depending on how many views you get on your post. To some people, that's addicting. To others, it's a goal. And to a few, it doesn't matter. But to too many of us, it does, and far too much. Enough to judge a person and be biased against their work because they could have a lower level. Sure, just because the user is new doesn't mean that their work is automatically crap, and shouldn't be given the time of day. It should! Supporting new members is a way to help PMC continue to grow, and to help it become a nice, friendly environment, and not a hostile, segregated community it's becoming, where low-leveled users have to struggle to get the most basic attention, while the higher leveled users just get their future tossed at them.

If PMC turned into that kind of environment, which most of you are probably thinking that it couldn't happen, (Psst, it can, and is starting to) the amount of new users would steadily drop until there's barely any. Low-leveled posters would start to give up and quit, even though they had talent, but were cast aside because of a number. The only posts that would be made are by the high-leveled members on top of their mighty thrones, and PMC would eventually wither and die. Now I know that it withering and dying away is a great exaggeration, but it does help get the point across. Without the individuality that each new member brings to the table, PMC would get stale. Last weeks news. Even with new posts made by old members, it wouldn't be anything new. The site could loose it's allure like that, too.

So, all in all, as I'm sure you can guess, I believe that each and every user here should give the support they'd want, and in turn, receive it from another user doing the same. If that happens, then there's constant improvement! Good, new, original skins! Interesting blogs on topics people haven't made yet! (I know I failed here.) And incredible projects made by incredible people! So go out and Diamond something you like! Give it the support it deserves! To quote my friend GreaseCraft (I think we're friends. x3) 'Is the submission quality? If the answer is anywhere near yes, by all means, leave a Diamond!'

To contradict your point about high level users being the only guys to have success, I'll offer some advice to low leveled users; gaining a following is one part quality, one part marketing. Achieving the popular reel whether home-page or your tab of choice can happen even for low level'd users. I personally got reel at level one, why? If you have proper quality then it all comes down to the several hours immediately after posting. Several things I keep in mind when creating a project: Always post at a time of high traffic, once the project is online, send it out to your friends, advertise in chat, make a forum topic etc... Once you are on the pop reel though, you can usually relax and ride it out :P
Hope I helped,
Legend

Well, yea, but pop-reeling is about the ratio of diamonds to views within the specified posting time. Users with large fanbases are much easier to get onto pop reel, as they only need roughly five diamonds within a short amount of time of posting to get it on pop reel, generally being about twenty to thirty views.

I try, but I'm also getting a nagging feeling I kinda missed what I was pointing to, or that I've repeated myself too many times.

Nah. You stressed the points just enough that you didn't seem overbearing. Any more and you would have seemed like a ranting preacher, much less and you wouldn't have made much of a point. It was a good balance.

Ah good. But, for now, I'm back to writing fiction. Or not. Dunno. I enjoyed writing about this kinda stuff.

I decided to try to start digging up lesser known PMC artists and such and bringing em to more public attention. The more people who know about it the better. So it kinda' benefits everyone. http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/in-the-wastelands-of-pmc-the-great-talent-hunt-1/

People can forcibly forge for their aqua beauties by advertising in chat and showing their projects to friends

And yes, Diamonds are likes, no question about it
