donate |Ë dÅ nÄ t, dÅ Ë nÄ t|
verb [ with obj. ]
give (money or goods) for a good cause,
for example to a charity or as support.
On almost every server you go to, they offer little rewards and in-game perks to people who pay money to the server. It's called donating, but that's not really what it is anymore. Donating is supposed to be an act of non-selfishness, where you give a bit of money as support to that server/cause (as mentioned in the above definition).
People don't like donating to servers unless they get something beneficial to them in return (kind of selfish, that is). That's NOT what it's about at all. As I said above, donating is like saying 'Thank you for this amazing server!', and really, you shouldn't expect anything in return. But server owners decided to make little gifts and perks for people who chose to donate to their servers, as a 'Thank you' back. This has turned into a 'paying for goods' system on most servers, instead of the 'Thank you for an amazing server!' bit. Of course, most people who donate to a server DO like the server, but when they donate/pay they expect that perk to be exactly how they imagined it. If, for some reason, the owner changes something you get, the donator gets up in arms about it. They PAYED for that perk, after all. And that's true if they PAYED for it. But if they DONATED for it, they shouldn't expect anything from it. If the owner wishes to change it, he can.
So, you can't call it donating anymore, if you look up there at that definition. Now, servers that do this should be calling these little perks and things IN-GAME PAYMENTS like on free applications from the iTunes Store or Android Market. Goods and services. The selling and receiving of goods and services is completely fine. But calling that process DONATING is not right.
I understand that Minecraft is mostly played by people in the age group of 8 to 18, and younger kids don't understand what a donation really is, or they do, but they don't understand the 'giving as a Thank You' process. But for a server owned by people/a person older than that to mix the definition of donating with the making of money as a business is a bit over the top. Or even someone who is younger, who doesn't really understand donating, to do it. (Sound familiar? o I CAN HAZ DONATIONS FOR MAH SERVER?!o Seen that a lot on PMC.)
Then, of course, there's the fact that most 'donation' packages on a lot of servers give stuff to the players that no normal, legit player could ever get. That's a bit unfair, right? I mean, someone who played for a year on your server, very loyal, gets less stuff than someone who JUST joined and donated. Hmm, yeah. Then, if you try to give that loyal player nice things, the person who donated gets angry. (Know that from experience...)
Well, I know a lot of people will probably disagree with this Article, but I wanted to get this out there. Anybody who actually does agree and understands it, cookies to you. I owned a server and know what the whole donating process is like, and dealing with people who just donated because they wanted the perk, and didn't do it for the server. So, I can understand why servers offer perks and things. But maybe they could call it BUYING A PERK instead of DONATING TO THE SERVER. That's what it's become in a lot of cases.
(To any servers that do express the fact of donating well, cookies and diamonds to you. Regards to Mirage Creative, as they defined it perfectly on their Buycraft page. See it HERE, under Donation Terms of Agreement.)
Anyway, feel free to voice your opinion on this matter in the Comments down below.
If you agree, drop a diamond to get this out there.

This has been the reality for me with a lot of my servers, and I'm fed up with it.
