I tightened the straps of the cloak, to try and keep out the biting cold, my teeth still chattering as I waited for my companions to arrive, with me standing by the obsidian frame, with the swirling purple void emitting the eerie sounds like it always had.

“Sorry about having you wait so long, preparing the food took longer than expected,” a voice that came from behind me said.

“Like I’d expect anything less from you, you probably went overboard again,” I replied.

“Hey! I do not go overboard, I only prepare enough for what may go wrong.”

When I turned around to face her, she had her arms crossed, with mine and her supplies in bags hanging from her arms, her diamond blue eyes shining with indignation under her iron helm. And behind her was another guy, lazily walking towards me, his emerald green eyes nearly looking glossed over.

“What about him? Is he ready?”

“Of course I am, but why do I have to babysit the two of you again?” he asked

“It’s not ‘babysitting’, you are coming along to protect us, since no one in the village has ever gone in there, they had decided that it’d be safest if our best warrior went inside,” she replied.

He puffed out his chest and grunted in agreement , “well… if that’s why, I see no reason to complain.”

I shake my head while laughing, “Let’s just get going, we’re going to need to fix whatever went wrong on the other side of this thing before this lingering cold ends us all.”

“Oh, alright… but you go in first!” she pushes me into the gateway as she starts laughing.

The second my feet entered into it, I could no longer see my friends, all could I see was pitch blackness, before everything started turning a cruel shade of red and I landed on my rear, making a loud clinking noise from when my iron armor hit the ground. After realizing what just happened, I stood up and took a look around me, seeing nothing but fire, red ground, ceiling and walls, and in the distance I saw an orange glowing pillar and a yellow glowing crystal hanging about in the ceiling.

After heaving a heavy sigh of relief, my brain caught up with what just happened and removed my cloak due to how hot I was suddenly getting, “How could she just push me like that! What if nothing was over here and I died?” I asked the air around me.

“I don’t know, celebrate that I’m free of you?” she adds from behind me.

I nearly jumped when I heard her reply to me (which would not have been good, as I was near the edge or a steep drop), “A-Anna! What are you doing sneaking up on me?”

“I’m not though, I just followed you through, like we had planned.”

“We DIDN’T plan to push me into the portal! We planned to enter together.”

“Hmm? Oh, yeah, that was just me, but I got Dan to laugh, so it was a win-win.”

“That’s not a win-win…” I tried to say.

“Just admit that you lost, no one wins against her,” Dan stated.

“Yeah… I guess you’re right…” I relent while drooping my head.

“Yay! I won again!” She cheered while jumping, “but where are we now? Is this the other side? It doesn’t feel that hot.”

“You two stay up here, I’ll take my supplies and look ahead,” I snatched my bag away from Anna and pulled out my water bucket.

When I got a few blocks away from the portal though, it got much harder to breathe and my lungs started to burn then I began to cough, but it calmed down and I was able to breathe (somewhat) normally. When I got near an edge, I emptied my bucket, but it was not the usual ever flowing water that I would have used to get lower, but instead, a plume of evaporated water poured out of it.

“Guys! Come here!” I shouted, and shortly after they came to where I was.

“What’s wrong?” Dan asked.

“Did you get hurt? Aww… no you didn’t,” she complained.

“No, the only thing that happened was that my bucket didn’t work, it just evaporated when I put it down.”

“That’s it? Aren’t you just usele-” she froze after her bucket did the same thing as mine did, “uh… what?”

“Let me try something,” he said while he brought out a small shovel from his bag that grew to a more reasonable size and started trying to dig a path down, making slow progress.

“Try using a pick… here’s one,” I toss him an iron pickaxe, and when he uses that instead, it breaks apart after two hits, instead of the tens of hits it took with a shovel.

When we made it down, the heat got even worse, “we’d better find a place that goes up somewhere else, I don’t think we can last too long down here.”

“Y-Yeah… this’ll really mess with my hair.”

“Over there! There’s… stairs?”

When I looked over where he had pointed, and sure enough, there was an aging staircase leading up to a doorway at a higher ledge, “c’mon, quickly head over there!”

We hurried over there and climbed the steps, opening the (pink?) door and finding ourselves in a decrepit home built of the same material as the door we entered through, but with all the amenities of a home in our village, and a handful we’d never seen before. On a table it had gold coated in that red rock, some gold bars, a white crystal, and some reddish brown scraps

“Who lived here? And why?” Anna asked the home with no life.

“I don’t know, but it was obviously a long time ago, there still might be useful supplies in here.”

“I think I found something! Come to me,” Dan called out to us.

We headed towards where he was, and found four cages, iron bars rusted, one of them broken, and the wall behind it, and each of them housing a rotting pig carcass, with a crossbow or golden sword in the cage as well. I also noticed a lectern with a worn book laying on top of it, “What is this? Possibly their diary?”

“Why would someone keep a diary in here?”

“What else would the person living here have a book for?”

“Calm down you two,” he stepped between us and we both backed off.

“I’m going to read it,” acting upon my words, I opened it to the first page, telling of a man choosing to set up a base here (why would you want to?), later on it went to tell of the ‘Piglins’ that he had captured in his cages (those things aren't pigs?). After skipping through unintelligible jargon, a passage caught my eye, ‘Now that my Piglin subjects have properly been relieved of life, and that I have successfully reanimated them to still wander, they are no longer hostile, with them only attacking when provoked.

“Guys, come read this, it seems like the guy living was experimenting on those bodies,” I turned around to see what they’re doing, Dan was looking at that floating book from earlier, while Anna was prodding one of the corpses with her iron sword.

“Why’s it so important?” Anna half-heartedly replied.

“Because, I don’t think those corpses are-” she must’ve poked it one too many times, as the pig like creature, stood up and grabbed the sword in its cage before screeching out a bone chilling sound (even in this exceptionally hot environment), Anna stumbled backwards while screaming as the others got up as well, and picked up their weapons.

“Get back!” I shouted as I brought out my sword, hands shaking.

The first creature ran at the bars, sword raised, but when it hit them, they didn’t break (entirely) and the creature fell backwards, the others doing the same thing. After a few moments, all of them had broken through their cages due to the deterioration and ran at Anna, with her being curled up in a ball, sobbing, and having her sword raised to try and impale them when they got close.

But, me not wanting to see a friend die, ran over there and sliced the head of one of them off, but rather than killing one of them, all of them turned towards me and raised their weapons to attack, I closed my eyes and raised my sword to block their blows, which never came.

When I opened my eyes, I saw Dan standing in front of me, with the rotting creatures all cut in half, “t-thanks for the save…” I dropped to my knees, sweat dripping off my forehead, and breathing heavily. “You know, when I’d first heard that people were going to find out what happened on the other side of the portal, I was one of the first that had signed up, as it was something none of us had done before, but I didn’t expect anything like this…”

“No one did.”

“But… who would’ve thought, I’d fight a pig with a sword?”

“What should we do about Anna?”

“I don’t know, she was terrified when that thing first moved. She hasn’t moved since you killed them,” once I thought things had calmed down I hear a deep oink coming from the hole in the wall, “why does this place like pigs so much?”

Dan gets up and walks towards the hole, before he jumps backwards and a giant pig tears through, breaking down the wall into the main area as well.

“I got Anna, you go through the hole, I’ll follow in after you, but we just need to make it out of here and to a safe place,” he said while he ran over and picked her up.

I got up and ran towards the hole it came through, with Dan carrying Anna not far behind, but, when we came outside, it wasn’t like the barren wastes at the front of the home, this place had vegetation and… more of those giant pigs roaming everywhere.

“We should have stayed in that building and gone home! This is much worse than just one of those things!”

“No it isn’t, we can dodge them easier out here than in there, and what happens if more had come in? Could we have survived in such a small place?”

I had no answer to his question, so I kept silent and kept running, which brought more of those beasts after us the further we went, but after a bit of running, the underbrush caught my foot and I went down in a heap.

He stopped running and came back to me where I had fallen, he set her down and brought out his (now) pinkish glowing iron sword, “You okay? If you are, help me fight those things.”

“Yeah, I should be okay,” I brought out my sword as well, but when those things got close, they slid to a stop and scattered, seemingly terrified of something.

“What?” He asked while dropping his sword.

“I… don’t know what just happened, but what’s with your sword? Why’s it glowing now?”

“I guess it had something to do with that floating book, and when I was holding the gems and my sword. Most likely when the gems shattered, something came out of me and my sword started glowing like this.”

“Ha… that’s pretty cool, you always seem to get the cool stuff,” Anna said, which surprised both of us.

“Y-You’re back with us?”

“Yeah… and I should be okay as long as I don’t see any more of those things from earlier.”

“That’s good, now I don’t have to carry you,” he said with a smirk.

“Hey! You should be proud of carrying someone like me.”

“Both of you, this is not the time, we need to figure out what spooked those things,” I said while I was looking for it.

They both silently joined in, and after a very short amount of time we noticed the blue and orange mushroom, in an environment of almost entirely red, “if I had to guess, I’d say it was probably this.”

“Then pick it up and let’s quickly get out of here, I don’t like this place.”

I picked up the mushroom and an arrow whistled and embedded itself into the giant mushroom behind where I was standing, causing me to duck into an even lower position.

“Run, I’ll follow behind, your lead with that.”

I stumbled to my feet, grabbed Anna’s hand and had her run with me as Dan covered our backs from our ranged assailants. I didn’t care where we ended up, but any place would be better than here, so I kept blindly running forward until the ground under foot turned blue instead of red.

“Now what’s this place going to have?” I asked half-seriously and half-jokingly.

“Let’s just hope it’s better than those walking pig things, I don’t ever want to see them again.”

“Then don’t look back,” Dan said, so I looked back, and saw a group of them coming towards us.

“Let’s go a bit further in, it should be safer there,” I recommended.

“Good idea, let’s go,” he agreed and we carted Anna away from those things.

“This place seems too calm… it’s making me uncomfortable,” as if in response to my comment, I walked into something, that something being an enderman.

“Don’t look up… they’re everywhere,” Dan informed me.

“A-At least they’re not aggressive…” she tried to reassure us, it didn’t work.

We very carefully navigated through the field of enderman, until we left that biome, coming onto a piece of land that was brown in color, and when we looked up, saw the blue fire rising from it, and skeletons of long dead beasts laying within it.

“We really need to find a way out of this place, but only those portals seem to let us enter or leave.”

“Then all we have to do is find one? Shouldn’t be TOO hard.”

“We haven’t found one, not since we entered,” he stated.

“That doesn’t mean we won’t find any, just that we haven’t yet, I’m sure we’ll make it out of here.”

“Yeah, I agree with her, there’s still hope for us to escape,” I march forward as I am scanning for a portal for us to escape this place of unforgiving torture.

After a small distance walked, I felt like something had started tugging at my legs with every step I took, slowing down my walking speed. When I looked down, I saw that I was standing on what looked like screaming faces, and blue, semi-transparent hands were grasping at my legs.

“This block seems to want to keep me here, be careful where you step,” and after I said this, a high-pitched wail echoed throughout this place.

“There’s someone else here! That sounded like a girl crying, follow the voice!” She ran after the sound, so we had no choice but to follow her.

When we arrived where the wailing and crying was coming from, we saw nothing but some white tentacles drooping down from the ceiling, “where’s the girl Anna?”

“I-I don’t know, she should be here…”

Then, the tentacles moved downwards as a white mass with a sad face let out the same wail we had been hearing from before.

“T-That is what was wailing? M-Maybe it’s friendly?...” as if in response to what she just said, it opened its eyes and mouth and shot out a fireball the size of us.

We jumped out of its path, but it blew up a decent amount of the sand with faces in it, which unleashed a lot of those things and a horrid chorus of screams, wails and cries, while the faces formed together into a second of the wailing creatures.

“We need to go!” Dan shouted as he turned on his heels and ran off in another direction, which we followed.

And it seems that the explosion woke up this whole place, as some of the tiny piles of bones got up and started shooting at us as we ran, while more and more of those giant ghosts (or, as I like to call them, ‘Ghasts’). But, I then saw something in the distance, “there’s a portal ahead! We’re almost out!”

We all changed our course and headed straight for the portal, and after a few more minutes of high intensity dodging, we arrived at the portal.

“You two go through, I’ll go in last,” I said.

“Okay!” Anna takes that opportunity and jumps through it first with no hesitation.

“No, you go through first, I’m the best fighter, I have the highest chance of escaping last.”

“No, that’s why you need to go in before me, so that there’s no chance of us getting separated.”

“No! Go through the portal!”

“Then we will need to go through together,” after I said that, I hear the same shriek those ‘ghasts’ make when they shoot a fireball, so I looked up to see where it came from.

But while I was doing that, Dan punched me into the portal and turned back around and cut the fireball in two, “no, you are the one that needs to survive, just let me do my job… okay Steve?” He asked as I saw the fireball start to explode before I was enveloped by the black abyss again.

I get thrown out of the portal, back onto the other side of the portal where Anna is, and I see cracks form, coming from the purple mist of the portal and glowing in a shade of purple. Then the frame explodes and throws me onto my back.

“Where’s Dan!? Wasn’t he supposed to come through too?” Anna asked.

“He… pushed me… through the portal, a fireball… exploded in front… of him…” I said as I hurt all over, and while she ran over to me, I was lost in the darkness and I passed out.
