I AM SAD BECAUSE I LITERALLY CANNOT MAKE THIS UNLESS NASA GIVES ME ONE OF THEIR COMPUTERS. :'(
For Arnor AND Harad:
1:1 scale ratio - 40,000 by 80,000 tiles (5,120 km by 10,240 km)
1:2 scale ratio - 20,000 by 40,000 tiles (2,560 km by 5,120 km)
For Anror OR Harad:
1:1 scale ratio - 40,000 by 40,000 tiles (5,120 km by 5,120 km)
1:2 scale ratio - 20,000 by 20,000 tiles (2,560 km by 2,560 km)
I might also separately try Númenor (as it was up to II 3319):
1:1 scale ratio - 8,000 by 8,000 tiles (1,024 km by 1,024 km)
1:2 scale ratio - 4,000 by 4,000 tiles (512 km by 512 km)
That's before it sank, of course.
Each tile is 128 by 128 blocks (and as of 1.2, 256 high as well).
My estimation for the 40,000 by 40,000 tile (not block, but tile) map would be 700 TB (28 TB for the 1:1 Númenor), so maybe come back in a decade or so! I could have it as a server then. ;)
As you can see, these are massive sizes.
I'm building a gaming rig once the new Ivy Bridge processors come out, so I'll have much more RAM than currently. I might just build Arnor (the main area of LOTR) and leave Harad out, even though I want to because of the troops that come from there for battle, despite having little information on it. If I can't get the 1:1 ratio for Arnor, then I'll hold it til my rig is built.
Even if I have to make many "smaller" units and MCEdit them together, I will do this project!
THIS IS MY MAIN GOAL (THE MAIN LOTR AREA AND A BIT OF RHÃ N AND HARAD AS A BORDER):
As my first project was merely inspired by The Lord Of The Rings, I think I might take on making a map of the entirety of Middle-earth during the Third Age and possibly beyond, given what illustrations of the Earth during the existence of Middle-earth show to work upon.
I find myself lacking in the architecture area, but I feel I am rather good at landscaping. As such, I'd make the entire map as just landscape, leaving the construction to whoever wants to take it on, which would be a good start for servers.
As the map would be vast, the uncompressed World Save might amount to quite a few GB, and it would have an ocean border as the maps show...
As such, I'd release the map for anyone to use and for servers and whatnot, given appropriate credit is given.
HOW I WOULD DISTRIBUTE THIS PROJECT IS A PUZZLE, EVEN COMPRESSED MIGHT TAKE A FEW SEPARATE FILES ON MEDIAFIRE.
OF COURSE, THE CREATION OF THE MAP WOULDN'T BE IN MINECRAFT, BUT USING A THIRD PARTY MAP DESIGNER, AND THEN TERRAFORMING WOULD OCCUR IN THE GAME ITSELF. I CAN START ON THE MAPPING, BUT WON'T BE ABLE TO WORK ON THE EXPORTED WORLD UNTIL THE SPRING WHEN I GET A NEW LAPTOP, AND THUS A LOT MORE HDD SPACE.
Here are a few photos of what I'd follow for creating the massive map.

Great! Another LOTR lover!
I have started building Middle Earth a while ago with another guy.
So maybe we could help eachother out, We got most of the buildings/cities done, Only the landscaping is a big issue. Since you're good at it, Maybe it's helpfull if we help you!
Send me a PM if you're interested!
kind regards
