“You know they said not found right? They didn’t say anything about not being heard.” Gary quacked trying to cheer George up.
“So…” George took a deep breath, “I’m a ghost?” Gary nodded. Everything was starting to make sense. At least being a ghost lets me interact with things, George thought hopefully, Maybe things aren’t so bad after all. She managed to give Gary a tight smile, which is more than the duck had hoped for. He puffed out his chest a bit, and put a little more strut in his stride. George couldn’t help but giggle as one last tear slid down her cheek. She was so focused on Gary that George nearly fell up the last step, which woke up Harper.
“Feelin’ better now?” George asked as she set the fox down.
“A bit,” Harper replied through a stretch.
“Harper, Harper, Harper!” Gary cried as he raced up to her.
“What’s up buddy?” Haper asked, bleary-eyed.
“Those voices they said not found right?” Gary pushed on.
“Yeah what about it?” Haper asked, becoming more interested.
“Well, they didn’t say not heard! Any human can hear her and see the items she interacts with!” Gary continued.
“So like a ghost?” Harper asked incredulously.
Gary nodded enthusiastically.
“So what are we waiting for? Let’s go get George’s stuff and test this theory!” Harper cried in high spirits.
“Wait I’ve gotta get out first, wouldn’t want to fall on any a’ ya’ll,” George yelled after them. But they didn’t seem to be able to hear her over their excitement, so George just squeezed through the cave entrance after them.
“AH! HA HOT!” George yelped. Her skin felt like it was on fire but at least she wasn’t see-through like she expected. But it wouldn’t stop burning, so she splashed into the lake. Every part of her body under the water’s surface was cooled. She swam further in, until one of her feet got tangled in some of the lake’s plants and dragged her under.
