[Guide]How ur server become popular easy steps !

Seeing as theirs a high demand for this guide I'm just going to share
it. If you find it informative. Please rate, and vouch. Otherwise, put
some constructive criticism.

There are 3 simple steps to what makes a server successful.

Plugins:

As many people fail to see is, plugins aren't really that important. I
could get maybe 6 plugins off bukkit dev and get 40 people on daily.
People do it all the time. But how? You see, a server has to have an
idea. An image. And this image has to convincing to other people. You
have to make this image stand above all others. But how? I'll explain
later but first I'd like to tell you that having a plugin designer by
your side is good to have. Having a particularly decent java programmer
will not only give you an edge, but will provide you with the little bit
of tedious upkeep you may require on your server regarding configs and
other things. Post on minecraft forums that you're currently looking to
partner with someone in making a server and they need to know some form
of object oriented programming language
Staffs:

It is very important that you understand the difference between mature
staff and non-mature staff. The secret to having a successful server is
having a happy community. Say your best friend Joe wants to be an Admin
but you know that Joe is a pathological . The right decision is to not
hire him. You need to realize this is a business, not a family
get-together. Non-maturity in staff will drive people away. I can
personally guarantee it. If staff members can't properly assess a
situation and make the proper decision that you seem fit, then it's
better to NOT have a staff. Whenever I hired staff, I did an immense
screening process, where they would have to be of a certain age, they'd
have to have a certain amount of skill, knowledge of the commands, a
good personality, ect ect. Do NOT let anyone, unless you can trust them
fully, hire people onto staff. Now, this is also important, I am a firm
believer that power is corrupt, thus, absolute power is absolutely
corrupt. Therefore, in each of my servers, I hired 2 "Owners". These
people need to be your best friends, and you need to be able to trust
them with anything because they should have the same power, recognized
or not, as you do. Even though it's your server, they need in on it.

In most cases, a community starts when two or more people have
something in common. So, here's what you do. Post EVERYWHERE. Go to
voice.teamspeak.org, the default server, and make a channel called,
"Minecraft psw 123". There are 1000+ people on that server. Chances are
there are 1-4 people that will join your channel. Tell them you're
starting up a server, wanna mess around in survival. You now have a 5
man survival server. What's next? Post on minecraft forums that you're
having a "beta" or even a "let's play" and you need some people to join.
1-3 people will ask to join. You are now building a community. And you
have 7 regulars. Now this is where you want a java programmer. Things
that you can do to advertise:

Free:Change your skype status
Post on your facebook
Invite friends from other games
Change your game statuses.
Talk about it in communities.
Post
on youtube and get people to like it for you. (But make it climatic
when you post. ie Don't just put "join mi serv it awesum!!!! IP:
mc.imadumb.org" Actually put some thought into it. Remember, a ton of
people are going to see it. So, post it on very highly viewed minecraft
videos.
Promote it on minecraftforums/planetminecraft/reddit.
Method:
>>Remember you're looking to bring in a little group at a time,
so just be like "I want maybe 3-4 people to play survival with". Have
them join the server, wala. You're not instantly going to get 300 people
daily.

Could potentially cost moneyMake a billboard.
Make an advertisement.
Make a video trailer.'

Paid Advertisement:

There are many different places you can advertise, if you have the cash
to do so. The best places to advertise, (for obvious reasons) is YouTube
ads, Google Ads, and planetminecraft/minecraftforums ads. The reason
being is that these advertisement groups reach out to your particular
group of people. (Minecraft or anything related to Minecraft), so when
you look at a popular minecraft video on youtube, right before it, you
have to watch 5 seconds of your ad. Best advertisement ever hands down.
You can't beat this advertisement, because youtube is the not only one
of the most visited sites in the world, but it reaches out to your
entire audience, not just a few. These people are the most developed
pioneers in the advertisement business. You simply can't put them any
other place other than the top. Other places to look out for is
minestatus sponsored websites, bukkit sponsored websites, gyazo (There's
a contact form at the bottom), gaming community websites ect ect.
Becoming sponsored on very well known websites is not only key to
getting your business to it's prime but, also, it will guarantee
success.

Votifier

Now, after you get maybe 10 people. It's time for votifier. How you use
votifier will depend on whether or not your server will make it to the
big leagues or not. There are very few things that allow your server to
be so popular. Votifier, by far is the easiest. Now what you want to do
is create a vote to survive method. Meaning, your server will offer
something amazing if you vote. But not something normal. Don't make it
if you vote you get 1000$ and 3 stacks of diamonds. No. DO NOT DO THIS.
This is a terrible idea. Not only does it ruin any economy that you
might have on your server, but it's also not original. Voting needs to
be tasteful, meaning, when you do it, you are doing it because it looks
appealing. On my old server, you voted and got a chest. But not just any
chest, it was a chest that you placed down and it had a range of random
items in it. You had the chance of coming out big, but chances were
that you weren't going to. for about 7 days all I got was dirt and
cobblestone. If it's a creative server, you have to vote for creative.
(This idea has NOT been taken btw) But, it's that excitement that makes
this exact action of voting a common term in gaming known as "dailies".
Voting survival. Make voting appealing, but not game breaking.

Side Note

Publicity is about the hardest way to get to the top. So, if you sit in
your room thinking that some famous person is going to eventually get
onto your server and make it famous. No, this will not happen. The
chances of a remotely famous person in Minecraft coming onto your server
is VERY VERY VERY slim. Do not occupy your mind with such a dream. If
your server is dieing, then something is wrong within your community.
Ask your community what it wants. It's important to give them a voice.
Some things just aren't fun. You have to find out what is fun, and
integrate it. Seeing as you already have plugin developers, here's an
idea that just came to the top of my head. You create a server, and the
only way you can rank up, is through accumulative votes. You make an
object that you right click as a rank up currency. If you achieve so
many points BAM your group changes. The votifier plugin API is a breeze.
Each server needs to have an achievement. The reason why "fast-action"
servers work so well, is because it shows you early on what the server
is about, they're fast, fun, but they die easily because there is no
goal. Your server needs a goal inorder to work. Like for single player,
there's a goal, eventually you'll beat the enderdragon. That's what
makes survival so good. You need a point to play your server with
end-goal achievements. That's what keeps player retention. That's what
keeps people moving on.

Things you should not do

PVP

Alright bare with me, there is a long list of things, that you should
never ever do for the sake of your minecraft server. If you're running a
PvP server, never have a limitless border. Trust me, I've seen this.
Way out in noman######land you find a dirt house. No. Hell no. Raiding
servers need to have some form of boundries. Now kits and starting
equipment. On a pvp server, I would recommend that you give the players a
less of an advantage, and I'll tell you why. When you have a full
diamond set, and you didn't work your ass off to get it, naturally, for
those who mostly lazy, it's one of the best things you're going to get.
People who get on, PvP and then die, are less likely to log back onto
your server, but, if you give them the idea that the server is about
security (Keeping your items safe), then you have a better chance at
player retention. It may not sound like it makes sense, but trust me, I
know what I'm talking about. Think of it this way, if you counteract
your senior players who worked their ass off to get their stuff, with
giving new players diamond armor, that essentially make spawn the
absolute worst and dangerous place. You don't want that. When people log
onto the server, they shouldn't have the thought in their head, okay, I
need to make it out of spawn or I die. Look at this map:

KeyMost dangerous: Red
Moderately dangerous: Orange
Mildly dangerous: Yellow

With PvP having starting equipment and kits, this is what the PvP looks like. You want it all to be orange or all Red. That is your goal as a PvP server.

PvP servers should never ever have money/items for voting. The reason
why is because giving items to players is BAD. I don't care what anyone
says, if you make a PvP server easy, it will not be fun. Period. As a
player, getting all the good , getting all the items is what they want.
They want that to happen, but the satisfication of getting these items
won't be enough to keep them on the server. Take some advice from
someone who has ran a PvP server for 2 years and made it to #1 on
minestatus with it.

Creative

There are a couple things you should never ever do on a creative server.
Creative servers, I would say, are targeted the most for griefers. Why?
Because they're already promised creative of course. Never ever give
out staff positions like candy. I know this is for pretty much every
server, but creative servers in especially. Never make your
worldedit/voxelsniper limitless. I've been on too many creative servers
with an admin who didn't know how to use worldedit. Before I hired
anyone onto my staff, I made sure they proficiently knew worldedit and
voxelsniper and I sat down with them, and went through every single
command in the existence of those two plugins. I would recommend
changing the amount of block changes to a much lower block account if
you plan on giving multiple people on the server worldedit privileges.
This can be accessed in the worldedit config. Never ever give your
starting group a load of privileges, to me, there's always a large
room for improvement. Create a rank up system, where they can rank up.
But only allow expert builders and people able to give constructive
criticism on builds be able to change groups. Have them inspect builds,
and if they feel as if they are good enough, give them a rank up, that
offers better things. I personally recommend whitelist, but that doesn't
always work. Do not ever run a hybrid server. I honestly can't think of
one successful hybrid server. Every server has a point, cross
referencing a creative server and a survival server is not only stupid,
but it doesn't go with the community, and they just don't look
appealing. Servers that you can do everything on, aren't appealing.
Period.

"All men dream,
but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of
their minds, wake in the day to find that it has vanity: but the
dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams
with open eyes, to make them possible."
