Hello and welcome to my tutorial on how to create texture packs.
its really quite simple when you get the hang of it, first off you'll need a few programs.
Winrar and paint.net (Links at the bottom of this page)
In order to get the the actual file that needs to be edited you need winrar, and paint.net is a free paint program great for this sort of thing. Are you on a mac? no worries goto the appstore and get the unarchiver, and get paintbrush(link also at bottom) instead of paint.net
First things first. goto your "Start" button and type in "%appdata%" and pres enter. You should see a file come up.
The first folder should be ".minecraft" if its not then look for ".minecraft". Click on .minecraft then click bin then right click "minecraft" and choose "open with" and choose WinRar. Winrar should op open and you should have a file with files such as "title, terrain, gui, etc.".
Now goto your desktop and create a new folder, lets call it "Texture Pack Apparatus". Take all the folders *NOT FILES JUST FOLDERS* and place them into the folder on your desktop. Now scroll through the Minecraft winrar archive and you should find 3 .png files: terrain.png pack.png and particles.png. take these and also put them in the desktop folder.
Now Lets Begin editing! but first let me explain some things. terrain is the terrain of minecraft (dirt rock etc.) particles are umm..... yea don't toy with those. and pack will be the picture next to your texture pack name. ex:" default has a pack.png of a mountain".
Now to realy edit. You remember all those folders you coppied over, well almost all of them have .png in them. these pngs are different textures of minecraft. Simply goto one, lets say chicken.png and rightclick>goto open with> and choose paint.net. then begin editing!
If you only wish to edit the terrain of minecraft (rock, dirt, etc.) then edit terrain.png
When you are satisfied with your texture pack, goto your desktop and rightclick>new>WinRar archive.
Name it the name of your texturepack. Now dump all the files from "Texture Pack Apparatus" into the newly made winrar archive. AND THERE YOU GO!
You have successfully created your first texture pack!

EDIT: TIPS ON PAINTING!
So you have all the gear and are ready to edit, but your artistic talents aren't quite as advanced as others.
No worries as Nic is here to help.
You ALWAYS want to pic colors that are next to eachother in hue values. such as gray and light gray, not red and blue. keep in mind that there will be shadow/light in game that affects the way it all looks. and most important have fun! don't make texture packs for fame make em for fun!
