Download the mod you want to run. Most mods are available on Minecraft forums, ensuring that you haven't downloaded a fake. The same cannot always be said for downloading mods from third-party websites.

While you download the mod, make sure you have WinRAR or a similar program installed. WinRAR is an archive utility, meaning that it can extract and open .rar and .jar files, among other things. If you don't want to download WinRAR, try a similar utility, such as:
  • 7zip

  • PeaZip

  • The Unarchiver

  • Winzip

  • Many others (search for "archive utility similar to winrar" and scan the results

Open your .minecraft folder. Depending on your operating system, there are several ways to do this:
  • In Windows 7: C:Users*Your User Name*AppDataRoaming.minecraft

  • In Windows Vista/XP: C:Documents and Settings*Your User Name*Application Data.minecraft

  • In Linux: /home/*Your User Name*/.minecraft

Once you've got into the .minecraft folder, locate the "bin" folder. In the .minecraft folder, you'll see several different files and folders. Be on the lookout for the bin folder. Open it.

In bin, locate the minecraft.jar file and unarchive it using WinRAR or a similar utility. Right-click on the file, and select "Open using..." and choose "WinRAR."

Download the modloader and/or audiomod if necessary. Many mods require Risugami's Modloader and/or Audiomod in order to implement the mod. If your particular mod does require any of these programs, it should say in the "readme" file or on the forums where you found the mod. If it does, search for and download any files that are needed, installing them before moving on.
  • To install modloader, simply drag the .class files included into the minecraft.jar you opened with WinRar. If the drag and drop function does not work for you, try reinstalling WinRAR, or Winzip or 7zip instead.

Create a temporary folder for the extracted mod in case you make a mistake. Extract contents of the mod into a temporary folder in case you screw up and want to easily redo the process.

Drag the contents of the mod into the WinRAR window that has minecraft.jar open and drop them there. Some mods may include .class files within one of the files included. If this is the case, don't worry o WinRAR will merge the contents automatically.
  • On the other hand, some mods include simply, within their folders, a .zip and an un-zipped folder of the same name next to each other. Do not open the .zip folder. Simply drag both into your "mod" folder, which is inside your "resources" file in your ".minecraft" folder. If you don't have a "mod" folder in your "resources" file, make one and drag the files in.

Delete the META-INF folder in the minecraft.jar folder if the mod requires you to do so. This folder interferes with many mods.

Start playing Minecraft and enjoy the mods.

(Installing on MAC)

Make sure you have an archive utility downloaded. A common utility that comes preloaded onto OSX is called "Archive Utility," and it opens supported file types automatically. If you don't think you have Archive Utility, it might be best to download another utility, like The Unarchiver.

Go to Finder.

In the "Go" menu up top, click on "Go to Folder...."

Type the following into the Finder dialog box. Type in: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/ and hit Return.

Open the "bin" folder.

Once the "bin" folder is opened, right-click on the file named "minecraft.jar". Select the "Open With" option. Click on "The Unarchiver" or "Archive Utility" if possible.
  • As mentioned earlier, The Unarchiver is a free program that can be downloaded from the Mac App Store. If you don't have Archive Utility, or if Archive Utility doesn't work, this program is required to complete this step.

Look for both a folder named "minecraft" and a file named "minecraft.jar." Delete the file minecraft.jar.

Download the mod that you will be installing and follow the instructions on how to install the mod.
  • Some mods are more difficult to install than others. Be sure to read the instruction carefully. If you have any problems with or questions about installing the mod, don't hesitate to ask your question on one of the Minecraft forums.

Once you install the mods, go back to your "bin" folder and rename the minecraft folder to minecraft.jar.

Open Minecraft and enjoy the mods!

Troubleshooting

Make sure you have ModLoader or Audiomod installed if your mod requires it. Many people forget to install ModLoader or Audiomod, and many mods require one of the two or either in order to work.

Make sure you delete the META-INF folder in your minecraft.jar. Most mods will require that this folder is deleted in order to implement the mod. This folder keeps mods from being installed.

Make sure you don't have incompatible mods. Check the mod page for a list of incompatible mods, and look at instructions on the mod page for tips on how to fix them. Follow those instructions and try installing again.
