1. First of all, don't make it confusing. This can confuse the players who will soon be bored of that server because they don't know what to do. This goes for themed servers, PvP servers, and modded servers.

2. DO NOT ignore your players. Sometimes on a popular server, no one even listens to what I have to say, probably because of the fact that there are so many "Omega" or "Ultra" or "SUPERULTRAVIPHORSE" (ranked players). This leads into step #3.

3. DO NOT have a bunch of staff or ranked people. You especially shouldn't have so many colors for these ranks. It gets extremely annoying and it does not give the lower-ranked players (who do not have money to spend on useless ranks) a chance to be noticed or to have a say.

4. If you have a creative server or skyblock server DO NOT delete plots or islands after a month of inactivity. At least TELL THE PLAYERS about this consequence. I'm not saying that it should never be deleted, I'm just saying that the owner or staff should at least warn the players about this. People might have to go somewhere for a month, or might just want to have a life for one month. This is so STUPID and should not be included in these servers. I understand why, but they should at least check out the island before it being deleted to make sure it didn't look like hard work. I was on a skyblock server and I had the awesomest island ever However, I lost it due to me being on vacation and actually doing something other than playing Minecraft.

5.  And finally, don't make age restrictions that say you have to be older than 15. I see so many servers with things like "If you want to be staff, you must be at least 15 years old". Really? I'm going to be 13 in a few months and you don't think I can handle being staff or at least a rank? I kind of take this as offense, as saying that people under 15 are dumb and can't be staff. I have my own server and I know how they  feel - they don't want five year olds to run the server. They should just have a Skype voice interview, so that they can at least make sure that the player applying for staff is at least old enough for Minecraft. I hate this rule so much that I lied and said that I was 15 on a server because it was so fun and I wanted to be a builder for it. The staff is really nice and I haven't had a problem with me once. I am a builder on it, but it was shut down. I feel like if they opened it back up, and I told them that I was really 12/13, that they would either de-rank me or temporarily/permanently ban me. So after all of my supposed great building and kindness, they would ban me just for my age. Mm-mm-mm. SMH.

This concludes the things that you should and should not do to have good server. BTW, if you don't know why I didn't put the "a" in "How To Make Good Server", it's a nigahiga reference (kind of). Anyways, I'll see you guys in my next post and I will also try to post at least once a week on PMC. Bye!

Basically, what you need is a good host for said server, mature players that can take a joke, non-buggy plug-ins for Bukkit/Spigot servers, and good staff members. .-.

That's true. I agree with those and I feel like those should be added.

I have to disgree with #5 as well. First off, I am an older player. Old enough that in most cases, I am the oldest on most servers I go on. The last thing I would want as a player on a server is a 9 year old banning me from a server for some trumped up reason, and even worse confiscating anything that I build.
I also disagree with #4 to a certain extent. If you go onto a server and spend hours upon hours building something and then "fall off the map", then you should expect your stuff to get deleted. While I understand that people go away on long vacations, how long should a server owner wait for someone to return? One server that I'm a moderator on has a 60 day limit depending on the size of the build. I think that's more than fair. If they don't come on after 60 days, odds are they aren't coming back.

I know what you mean. You wouldn't want a 9 year old to be a moderator and ruin everything. I'm just saying that the age minimum should be reduced to 13 and not 15 or 16. Anyone who is at least 13 should be capable of being staff on a server. If not, then they'd be capable of running one, just like I do. (Except that I don't pay to have mine hosted, due to the fact that I don't have a credit card.)

The age restrictions exist because of stereotypes, and stereotypes exist for a reason.

Don't rely on just this blog to get more players. You may have to wait a while before you start to see even one player, because you have to wat for them to discover your server.

It's very hard to get a community thriving on a server, I think you'd agree.
