I've decided to use my time while the server is down to give a small tutorial to you.
If you post onto Planet Minecraft and want to attract downloaders to your build, you'll need to have a way to attract them. One way of doing this is using a well detailed or bright thumbnail.
You could use a render to make this, but that takes time and effort. One way I made my pictures have nice text and effects is using a free simple photo editing software called GIMP. So i'll include the download link at the bottom of this post, but now let's get started on the tutorial.
So if you're wanting to create something similar to this - it took me 5 minutes, keep reading
1. You're going to need some screenshots of your build, go get some of them.
2. Start running GIMP, once it's opened up, go to the toolbar and click File > Open > (wherever you saved the picture)
3. Now, time for the magic, go to the toolbar again and click Filters > Light and Shadow > Lens Flare and click on the preview screen where the light source is coming from. This will give you the shine on the camera which I obtained.
4. You may also want to add text to your picture like I've done, all you have to do is use a suitable font or even download a themed font - which is what I done. So all you have to do is click the 'A' on the left hand side toolbar then click and drag wherever you want the piece of text to go, to set a shadow behind the text go to the toolbar then Filters > Lighting Effects > Drop Shadow and it'll to it automatically as long as you have the text layer selected.
5. Remember to have a mess around with the other lighting effects and see if you can find anything that fits well.
6. Once done go over to the layers tab on the right hand side, right click any of the layers so the menu comes up then click 'Merge visible layers' and that will convert it all into the one picture.
7. The final step is to save it, so go to the toolbar and click File > Save As > (name).PNG OR JPG sometimes a warning comes up saying you have to export it, just click okay and GIMP will save it for you.
That is the tutorial finished, I hope you're happy with what you've produced!

(I can't believe I never though of using all those effects in the filters tab... :o)
