Introduction
I have tried many servers and many, many of them have failed.Either because of terrible lag,so little slots you have to fight over it,or, of course, griefing.Don't worry though new server owners!I hope this little tutorial helps you Please Your Community!

Note:I'm not going to tell you how to technically run your server but how to keep it running :3

First Impressions
When scrolling down the long list of servers thinking "Hmm what looks interesting..." What are you looking for?Something to catch your eye right? Here's some easy steps to attract newcomers!

1st:Have a good description!
People often want to know about the server before they join, you know, make sure they aren't making a mistake. With a good description, they might just put you on the possibility list!In your description you can put owner names, staff, staff openings, events, plugins,or even what separates you from all the rest!Kinda like a "Why join my server?" article.Be sure to sound polite!Don't be rude cursing out all the N00BZ and griefers like some kinda evil emperor.

2nd:Put effort in your representing picture!
Ever looked at the list of servers and noticed random pictures like maybe a anime character or a cheap un-matching creeper icon?Wrong.Put effort into it!Grab yourself a free pic editor like GIMP or Sumo Paint and make yourself a "flag" of some sort that represents what your server is!Maybe even some official colors like red, white, and blue.It gives your community something to be patriotic about and make skins for while also bringing attention from newcomers!

3rd:Name your server!
23 SLOT RP PLUGIN WITH STAFF OPENINGS AND NO LAG!!!!..
.. What? That's not a name its a man trying to sell hot dogs! How are people going to be spirited about your server if it doesn't even have a name?I assure you i'm not going to be cheering that every time.Like the description or page front picture you have to put effort into the name!Do something cool, catchy, and original like Power of Mind craft or even something in a different language that means creativity.Just don't yell out stuff that belongs in descriptions!

4th: Pile on the Pictures!
Lets face it, even the best of us get tired of reading after looking through piles of servers to the point you just give up and skip some.Don't let that happen to your server!Let the pictures do the talking!Grab your server BEFORE anyone is on it (especially if its a creative server) and make a couple of cool awesome things with your friends and staff and post it as the pictures. It might just help inspire people to come just for the tourist attractions!Even better is a full fledged music video of your server! You'll be swarmed in no time.

The First Visit
Oooh!lucky you! you got a new visitor! Now don't screw this up!This is the most important part of getting a loyal community! All you have to do is please him,simple....right?

1st: Give a warm welcome!
When you walk into a server for the first time wouldn't it feel good if someone was right there to say hi?This is a simple way to please your newcomer.Just have a staff or ,even, you welcome all the visitors by saying things like "hi" or "welcome to my server!" then explain about the server as well. You could say the events, introduce the staff, show them around, explain contest(if any), tell them the rules, or other things!Just be sure to be polite, not threatening or annoyed! That's a instant turn off.

2nd: Train your community not to act like dogs!
N00BZ!...
what was that? Was it some crazed sport fan yelling at a foul ball, or the community's local jerk?Sadly...it was a jerk and these jerks often turn off newcomers quickly.Usually afterwards they say things like "Eh, we didnt need them anyways!" munching on a bag of chips in there underwear. These people are what need to be tamed, or even, banned! They're annoying and often the quickest to grief or bully the new players. Watch out for them!

3rd: Show off your starter areas!
"dont read a book by its cover."Meh.Lets admit it, we do anyways, right?Having a awesome starter area grabs the attention and practically forces the newcomer to give your server a chance.Decorate like crazy!Maybe have the starter area way on top of a pillar that leads down with swirling stairs and waterfalls for all i care!Just make sure it GRABS your attention.

How to keep it going
So you gone this far.Got a good amount of people on,lots of staff, and everything seems perfect!Until maybe a couple of months later.Ideas seem to losen up and space apart and everything seems... boring. What can you do to fix this???

1st: Break the pattern
survival servers?Survive, create, survive, create.Creation servers? Create,create,create,create... bleh.Soon what else can you do?Break the pattern.Shake it up a bit!Maybe have events like contest ,or even, beauty pageants if you want to go that far!Show that your server is different! It'll make people want to be more loyal to your server if they don't want to leave in case they miss something!

2nd: It's more than a server!
Show the players your more than a server but a community!Make a website or even a forum to talk and put events on!Make a T-shirt for all i care!Just make sure you care about your server like your the mayor of a city!It might even get you a fan club like, i don't know, "Dragonman12 rocks! or The all might Mr. Creativity Craft!

3rd: Listen to complaints!
People will get tired of playing a server that has to many problems AND a lazy owner that's not showing any sign of fixing them. All the complaints will turn away new comers as well! If the comments say that the slots are too small shut down the server until its fixed! If the comments say that the staff are mental then fire them! I wouldn't go off one comment though if i were you...

Internal Failure
Alot of failure is on the inside where it all implodes on itself.Bad staff, terrible lag, little slots, or even constant reseting. This gets very annoying to players and causes them to rage quit on your server.

1st: Bad Employees
Whats the use in having staff if they don't work?In order to get a good staff you have to practically know them already.Which means they have to be already loyal to the server as it is.If your asking yourself "how am i gonna get staff at the beginning?" then here's the answer.Get friends.Call all your buddies over from other servers or from other neighborhoods and make a reliable, loyal, trustworthy staff.

2nd: Know what it means to own a server
This is the heart breaker. When your all ready to own a server you realize it takes WORK.If you test your server with your pals and notice it lags like crazy and the slots are already filling up with just you and your friends its time to upgrade.Try to make it the best it can be! If you cant make it run its time to get some research, earn some money, and buy a bigger and better server.

I hope you have some great times at your server!!!

Well, it depends, what kind of server is it?

creative or survival or rpg or other?

... OOOOH wait i recognise you now! well, in your creative servers do all people get creative?

i think whats most important is that admins have the ability to ban and rewind griefs.Including abilities to do emergency things like unlocking chest that doesnt belong to them (make sure you can trust your admins!)

Also, Many servers dont allow people to place water or lava because its often used for griefs even with plots i think. More staff abilities will prob become obvious to you as it comes like the ability to use cuboif or worldedit?

Hmm, good article. Most of it is common sense, but it really tells people what needs to be done. For people with good ambitions, this might spur them on to run a great server.
