This is an article for beginners on how to redstone. I will make more advanced ones after this one. Now to begin.

Redstone is a lot like electricity. If you power a redstone wire, it will light up and power any adjacent block. Redstone wires can transmit power over distances. A redstone current can travel up to 16 blocks through redstone wire before dying out. Sources of redstone power include: Redstone torch, lever, button, pressure plate, and tripwire. If you have redstone wires spanning very long distances, then you will need to repeat the redstone current, which will refresh it and allow it to travel another 16 blocks.

Redstone repeaters are very special redstone items with 3 different uses: A repeater, to refresh a redstone signal, a diode, to block multidirectional currents (redstone can only go one way through a repeater), and a delay. A redstone repeater will delay for 1-4 ticks, depending on what setting it is at (right click the repeater to change the setting). When using repeaters, always make sure to have them facing the right way!

Redstone can cause the following items to do things:

Wooden door/iron door/trapdoor- Opens/closes the door.
Piston/sticky piston- Causes the piston arm to extend and push a block (if it is a sticky piston, it will also pull the block when turned off).
Powered Rail- Will turn on, causing moving minecarts on it to move faster in the same direction.
Redstone Lamp- Will turn on, emitting light.
Redstone torch- When the block it is on is powered, it will turn off. More will be said about this property in a later tutorial.
