The Name:

No one wants to join a server called: BobsCraft or swordcraft...

Make sure you make a decent name, and make sure you use proper grammar. Dont use all lower case letters...

A Website:

Make sure you have a website/forums where users can report problems, suggest plugins, apply for staff, or even help would be nice! You can make one @ enjin.com/ or learn web programming languages such as PHP, HTML, and CSS, to make your own custom website so you won't be limited to certain features.

The Spawn:

Your spawn is your server's first impression by other players looking to find a good server, make sure to use one theme such as Medieval or Retro, don't just make the spawn out of all diamonds and gold blocks.

Advertising:

No one likes advertising, but someone has got to do it, make sure even before you advertise that you have a decent enough of a server so people won't get bored and leave... A good place to advertise is obviously PlanetMinecraft... Make sure to bump your server every 24 hours, and add a voting page onto your website so you can get recognized... Also add your server onto the forums under Server Advertisement. Another "decent" place is advertising on youtube, but try to post on about 10 videos before you give up.

Staff:

Staff is very important on your server because you can have extra eyes to watch for xrayers, hackers, spammers, modders, scammers, and rule breakers...

Make sure not to hire IMMATURE and YOUNG staff... That's how every server breaks down, and make sure not to make someone staff within the same day of knowing them, get to know them make sure you've known them for a bit before you even consider making them staff because they can ruin your server if they ever decide to get mad at you, or for the fun of it by giving everyone diamonds, money, or a certain rank.

Plugins:

If you are running a griefing pvp server you obviously don't want to add lockette or anti-greif... If you are running a creative server you don't want to add PVP plugins, be suggestive and ask your players which plugins they would like, don't just add everyone they tell you make sure you review it and see how it works and whether it fit your server theme. Make sure to get Anti-Xray, NoLagg plugins too.
