Hey guys,
This blog should educate you on the most important features servers need. {Remember these will be completely biased to my thoughts}

This might seem obvious, but the first thing you must do is decide what server you would like to host. Do not run servers from your home computer. {There are many risks associated with giving out your home ip}
This is a list of some of the best minecraft hosting companies in my opinion of course. Greatest, to less great. These hosts are cheap, and provide more than what you pay for.

Next, choose your high ranking staff. This can range from co-owner to admin. If you have a large group of friends that play minecraft, pick out the most mature of them. Immature staffmembers immediately turn players away.

Now that your staff is picked, you have to get some plugins. I will share a little list of plugins that I deem to be quite essential to running a server.

---Essentials- dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/essentials/
---Groupmanager- Link to download is also on the essentials page. Tutorial about how to set the ranks up => www.youtube.com/watch?v=06mqvMuSmHU
---Factions (For Pvp servers) dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/factions/
---PlotMe (For Creative servers) dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/plotme/
---Worldedit- dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/worldedit/
---Worldguard- dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/worldguard/
---Votifier- dev.bukkit.org/server-mods/votifier/

Pm me if you need guidance on more plugins. I have over 70 installed on my server, and am willing to share some if you really need it.

-I have all of this already, I just need more players!
Yes, while a lot of server owners are pulling their hair out because of this, others are thriving. What you need to do as an owner is create a friendly environment that players of all ages can enjoy. My top priority is to have so many features on my server that no one can get bored. What most people do when they open a server is download 5 plugins and have one option of enjoyment. Be as diverse as possible. Have more then one world, each with different things. One creative world, one pvp world, and possibly a minigames world. This way you will attract three types of communities. Also, since most of the minecraft server lists use voting, set up one hell of a voting package. It is okay to make it overpowered. This is a good thing because when players lose their items, they'll know they can get more by voting. Which helps you out a lot.

-That did not help me out much, I still need players.
Well, try to list your server on more than four server lists. Try to type in minecraft servers on your web browser. See which websites show up first and post there. Another helpful thing to do is to setup a very appealing donor system so you can make money and use it to increase your servers memory and possibly buy advertisements. As an owner, you also have the responsibility of caring for your players. You must show them that you are dedicated to your server. Don't go on for 5-10 minutes a day. I know we all have lives, but until you get a decent amount of players, you have to pamper your few ones that you have. In addition, tell as many friends of yours as possible. Have them tell their friends as well. This will turn into a snowball, that will only go on and on.

Hope this helps,
Pm me for any other help
